PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Jeff Carter reached another milestone. Simon Gagne hit one, too.

All those big round statistics are nice accomplishments, but the wins coming because of those goals mean a lot more to the duo and the rest of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Carter scored his 40th goal of the season and Gagne his 30th to lead the Flyers to their third straight win, 4-2 over Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils on Monday night.

"They have been such a big part of our team and those are quite big accomplishments," Flyers coach John Stevens said. "The balance in scoring we have up front, I think is terrific."

Carter and Gagne scored only 2:06 apart early in the third period to help the Flyers keep their hold on fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

Martin Biron was solid again and stopped 32 shots. He heard the "Marty! Marty! Marty!" chants that were so familiar when he led the Flyers to the Eastern Conference finals last year. Biron entered the game with a 2.73 goals-against average, the lowest it's been this season. He is 10-4 in his last 15 appearances, including a 27-save effort in Sunday's win at Pittsburgh.

"You kind of sense that same feeling that the playoffs bring and the desperation and that kind of atmosphere," Biron said. "It was entertaining."

Danny Briere had a goal and an assist, and Kimmo Timonen and Gagne each had two assists. The Flyers followed three losses in four games with road wins at Buffalo and Pittsburgh and now a victory against the Atlantic Division leaders.

"It seemed a week ago we were in a funk we were trying to get out," Briere said. "Teams were creeping up on us in the standings so this is a big step in the right direction for us."

Brendan Shanahan and Jamie Langenbrunner scored for New Jersey, which missed a chance to clinch a playoff spot. Patrik Elias sat out for the Devils because of lower body soreness after he was hurt Sunday against Boston. Elias, who has 30 goals and 77 points this season, is day to day.

Carter is the 13th Flyers player to hit the 40-goal mark in a single season and it's the 37th time in team history that feat has been accomplished.

"It's cool," Carter said of his milestone. "It's obviously nice to be able to help the team out and score some goals. It's definitely a good feeling. It's a good feat for myself and help from some good teammates."

At Sunrise, Fla., Ray Whitney scored 1:37 into overtime to lift surging Carolina.

Tuomo Ruutu and Patrick Eaves also scored for the Hurricanes, who improved to 8-1-2 in their last 11 games and moved past Pittsburgh into fifth place in the East.

Jay Bouwmeester and Cory Stillman scored for Florida, which has lost six of seven. The Panthers tied idle Montreal for eighth in the East with 81 points. Florida has played one more game.

Cam Ward, in his 22nd consecutive start for Carolina, made 37 saves. Tomas Vokoun stopped 28 shots for the Panthers.

At Calgary, Alberta, Mike Cammalleri scored a goal and added two assists as the Flames took advantage of shaky Detroit goalie Chris Osgood.

Osgood had been in net for each of the Red Wings' victories in a four-game winning streak. However, he made an early exit after starting a fifth straight game for the first time this season.

The only goal of the first period came at 10:57 when Dion Phaneuf scored his 11th goal on Calgary's second shot. Phaneuf's harmless-looking snap shot from just over the blue line beat Osgood on his glove side.

Jamie Lundmark, Curtis Glencross and Craig Conroy, into an empty net, also scored for Calgary.

Detroit rallied in the final 10 minutes behind goals from Johan Franzen and Jiri Hudler to get within 4-3. Pavel Datsyuk added his 30th goal for the Red Wings.
