EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -Steve MacIntyre didn't score the big goal or set up a breakaway but the 28-year-old rookie Steve MacIntyre still managed to spark the Edmonton Oilers.
Ethan Moreau and Fernando Pisani both had a goal and assist, and the Oilers scored three times in the second period to beat the Calgary Flames 3-2 Saturday night and remain unbeaten.
It was a punishing hit by the enforcer MacIntyre on Dustin Boyd and subsequent fight with Brandon Prust that really seemed to wake Edmonton up from a listless first period.
"That was a wicked hit on Boyd," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "It was an inspirational shift. The momentum changed somewhat at that point. He built an instant relationship with the fans. That was Relationship Building 101 by him."
Andrew Cogliano also scored for Edmonton, off to its best start since going 5-0 in 1985-86 and before that 7-0 in 1983-84. The second year Oilers player had the winner but believed MacIntyre's hit changed the flow of the game.
"That was a momentum turner for us," he said. "We were joking on the bench that we hadn't seen a hit like that in a long time. The guy that took that hit, we feel bad for him. And then he wins the fight right afterward. It was a big boost for the team and something we didn't have last year."
MacIntyre, playing in just his third NHL game and logging only 2:31 in ice time overall, was glad to make an impact.
"I just try to go out there and finish my checks and be a little bit of a spark for the guys," he said. "That's what I am here for. I was able to make a big hit and it seemed to help."
Todd Bertuzzi and Daymond Langkow scored for Calgary, which has gotten off to a disappointing 1-3-1 start.
"You're always concerned about giving up any lead; a one-goal lead or a two-goal lead or whatever the lead may be, particularly when you have earned it on the road," Calgary coach Mike Keenan said. "We went out and earned it in the first period and we weren't able to find that instinct or that ability to put it past their goaltender, who I thought played really well."
The Flames grabbed the lead just after the four-minute mark of the first period on the power play. Langkow fed a pass from behind the net to Bertuzzi for a one-timer past Mathieu Garon for his fifth of the season.
Calgary made it 2-0 on another man advantage with eight minutes remaining. Langkow slipped a shot through Garon's pads, and Edmonton defenseman Jason Strudwick inadvertently banked the puck off his goalie and in while trying to prevent it from trickling into the net.
The Flames outshot Edmonton 17-3 in the first period.
The Oilers' third line got the job done again just two minutes later to tie it. Marc Pouliot sent a backhand pass from behind the net to Pisani and he swatted it past Miikka Kiprusoff for his first of the season.
Edmonton netted its third goal in less than four minutes to take a 3-2 lead when Cogliano beat defender Mark Giordano and made a nice shot across his body that handcuffed Kiprusoff.
Notes: Oilers D Sheldon Souray didn't play after bruising his knee Friday in a collision with Flames forward Todd Bertuzzi. Ladislav Smid took his place on Saturday. Forward Sam Gagner also sat out following a hard hit he took in the third period Friday. ... The Alberta teams split last season's series 4-4. ... Kiprusoff started his fifth consecutive game. He allowed 19 goals for a 4.69 GAA and a save percentage of .843 in his first four games.
