CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -Edmonton made Calgary pay for its undisciplined play.
Trailing 2-1, Edmonton seized control of the game in the second thanks to five consecutive power-play chances, three of which the Oilers capitalized on.
"In today's game, you have to be disciplined in the amount of penalties that you take," Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish said. "We ran into penalty trouble when we got waxed up in Edmonton by Calgary (in the preseason). You have to be careful."
Cole tied the score at 6:30, tipping in a slap shot from Sheldon Souray. With Todd Bertuzzi in the penalty box for holding, the Oilers took their first lead at 11:39 when Ales Hemsky slid the puck back to the blueline and Visnovsky one-timed a slap shot into the top corner beyond the glove of Miikka Kiprusoff.
Less than 5 minutes later, Edmonton struck with the extra man again. Kiprusoff was able to close his pads to stop a redirected shot from Denis Grebeshkov, but the rebound dribbled out to the side where Nilsson was right there to swoop in and rip the loose puck into the top of the net.
"It's tough when we've got to kill five, six, seven penalties in a row," Bertuzzi said. "You ask any team, that's a tough hill to climb. You give them that many opportunities, they're going to cash in on a few of them."
Calgary crept back to within a goal at 7:41 of the third period when Bertuzzi exhibited a quick set of hands fishing a loose puck out of a scramble and tucking it inside the goal post for his fourth score of the season.
However, they couldn't get another goal past Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers, who won his first NHL start.
"It's always something special when you have your first NHL start. You think you know what to expect but it's something very different, the feeling is unbelievable," the 24-year-old Drouin-Deslauriers said. "The guys played amazing today, they played hard, they were everywhere. They helped me with every aspect of my game. It was a big team win."
After getting two great games from goalie Mathieu Garon, MacTavish surprised many by starting the rookie goalie but it paid off as Drouin-Deslauriers made 26 saves to help the Oilers improve to 3-0.
MacTavish said his young goaltender gave them everything they hoped for.
"He played fine, he did what he had to do," MacTavish said. "He made a big save off Conroy at the end on a goal-mouth pass. He's got that ability where he can get side-to-side. He's got a lot of ability and is going to be a good goalie."
Andrew Cogliano scored the first goal for Edmonton, tying the score at 1-1 late in the first period.
Adrian Aucoin gave Calgary a 1-0 lead at 6:53 of the opening period, and David Moss put the Flames back ahead at 5:39 of the second.
The two Northwest Division rivals conclude the home-and-home series Saturday night at Edmonton.
"We know we were right in this game, it was two points that we lost that I think we should have had so we're going to get on the plane, get to Edmonton, and have a good one tomorrow," Bertuzzi said.
