WASHINGTON (AP) -Phil Kessel and Patrice Bergeron scored shootout goals, carrying the Boston Bruins to a 5-4 win against the Washington Capitals on Sunday night that wrapped up each team's preseason schedule.

Alex Ovechkin had Washington's only successful try in the shootout. Boston goalie Manny Fernandez stopped Michael Nylander to open the shootout, and then sealed the win with a save on Alexander Semin's try.

David Krejci had two goals for Boston.

It was the first overtime game of the preseason for Washington (5-1-1). Boston (3-4-1) lost 2-1 in overtime to the New York Islanders in its second preseason game.

The Capitals had their most preseason wins since going 5-2 in 1999.

Washington goalie Jose Theodore kept the game alive with a sprawling save on a point-blank shot by Kessel with 18 seconds left in overtime. A wild exchange in the third period led to the extra session.

Boston took a 3-2 lead 10:41 into the third when Krejci put in a rebound for his second goal of the game, but the Capitals tied it about two minutes later on Mike Green's slap shot from just inside the blue line.

Green's goal came at 12:38 and started a 1 minute, 9 second spurt that produced three goals.

Chuck Kobasew gave the Bruins a 4-3 lead 26 seconds after Green scored, but the Capitals tied it again 42 seconds later when Chris Bourque redirected a slap shot from Karl Alzner.

Barely two minutes into the first period, Washington captain Chris Clark gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead.

With the teams skating 4-on-4 after each club was whistled for a penalty in the opening 1:18, Milan Jurcina fired a shot from near the blue line that Fernandez wasn't able to snare. Clark skated in from the left side, picked up the puck sitting near the left post and put in the rebound.

Krejci tied it at 14:30 of the first, putting a shot over Theodore's right shoulder.

Shawn Thornton gave the Bruins the lead early in the second when he sneaked a shot past Theodore from the bottom of the left circle at 3:07.

The lead didn't last.

Ovechkin got the Capitals even in the waning minutes of the second period. Boston defenseman Andrew Alberts fell down and lost the puck in front of his own goal, leaving it for Semin to scoop up and pass to Ovechkin in the left circle. Ovechkin took full advantage and fired a shot past Fernandez.
