DETROIT (AP) -The St. Louis Blues blew a two-goal lead, then redeemed themselves.

Brad Boyes' second goal of the game and 40th of the season gave the Blues a 4-3 overtime win over the NHL-leading Detroit Red Wings on Friday night.

Erik Johnson and Andy McDonald also scored for the Blues, and Paul Kariya had three assists. Manny Legace made 36 saves.

Johan Franzen scored twice and Brian Rafalski netted Detroit's other goal. Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk each had three assists, and Chris Osgood stopped 17 shots.

Boyes put in a one-timed shot from the left circle 2:43 into overtime after taking a pass from Kariya.

"The reason I've had so many tap-in goals is that Pauly's been setting me up," Boyes said.

The Blues led 3-1 with just over 6 minutes left in regulation.

"Almost exactly like the other night. We were playing well with a two-goal lead and, before you know it, it's tied," Boyes said. "But this time we were able to be resilient and come back and get the win."

Franzen tied it at 3, with 4:41 left, when he tipped in Zetterberg's pass from the right boards for his 25th goal.

"The second one, it was a great pass by Hank (Zetterberg) and I couldn't really miss it," said Franzen, who has 13 goals and four assists in 12 games. "So I have to thank him for that one."

Franzen's first goal cut Detroit's deficit to 3-2 with 6:33 remaining in the third when he put in a rebound for a power-play goal.

"I make a good save on Zetterberg and he knocks it in out of mid-air," Legace said.

Blues defenseman Jay McKee made a spectacular defensive play 4 1/2 minutes into the third period while lying on the ice between the circles. He knocked away Zetterberg's attempted cross-crease feed to Franzen, who would've had a wide open net.

"He went down to block it, and Zetterberg walks around him, and Franzen is wide open on the doorstep," Legace said. "He reaches out and tips the pass right into my glove."

McKee returned after missing three games with a foot injury.

Johnson gave St. Louis a 2-0 lead with a power-play goal 4:29 into the second period. His one-timed slap shot from the left point deflected in off Franzen's skate.

The Red Wings got on the board with a power-play goal just 38 seconds later.

Just 11 seconds into Jay McClement's hooking penalty, Rafalski scored his 13th goal.

McDonald gave St. Louis a two-goal lead 9:28 into the third period when he beat Osgood with a wrist shot from the right circle for his 17th goal. McDonald picked up the puck just outside Detroit's blue line after a turnover by Jiri Hudler.

The game featured the return of Darren McCarty, who made his season debut with the Red Wings. The forward had been nursing injured ribs after being recalled from a conditioning stint with Grand Rapids of the AHL on March 7. He played with the Red Wings from 1993-2004 and hadn't been in the NHL since last season with the Calgary Flames.

He was in the starting lineup with his old "Grind Line" linemates Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby and received several ovations. There was even a montage on the video screen dedicated to McCarty with 8:31 left in the first period. It ended with the words "welcome back."

"There was a lot of gratitude. It's tough to talk about because there is so much gratitude," he said. "The response from the people, it almost becomes uncomfortable, but in a good way. I really appreciate all of that."

Boyes opened the scoring with 7:40 left in the first period when he converted Kariya's backhanded pass from behind the net.

Notes: Detroit was without D Brad Stuart (broken finger), RW Mikael Samuelsson (groin), RW Tomas Holmstrom (lower abdominal) and G Dominik Hasek (flu). ... Detroit LW Dallas Drake was honored before the game for playing 1,000 NHL games. ... Three of Johnson's five goals were scored against the Red Wings.
