NEW YORK (AP) -Petr Prucha finally came through for the New York Rangers.
Prucha had only two points in 12 games heading into Saturday night's game against the New Jersey Devils, where he went from near-zero to hero by scoring the lone goal of the shootout in the Rangers' 2-1 win.
"I know that I wasn't scoring much this season, but I feel good on the ice and I didn't lose my confidence," Prucha said. "I knew what I wanted to do in the shootout and I did it."
Prucha, the second shooter, beat Martin Brodeur with a shot over the left shoulder.
"I was off position a little bit," Brodeur said. "That's his go-to shot. I gave it to him and he took it. It wasn't that great a shot, but he beat me."
In the overtime, Chris Drury has a great chance to win it for the Rangers just over a minute in as he broke in alone on Brodeur, only to be denied on a pad save.
In regulation, Scott Gomez scored for the Rangers while Sergei Brylin had the Devils' goal.
Both goalies were sharp. Lundqvist made 28 stops for the Rangers, while Brodeur turned away 26.
"We played really hard tonight," Lundqvist said. "New Jersey came out really hard as well. It was a fun game to play in, a lot of action."
The Devils, who had won two straight, left with one point and the knowledge they played a very solid road game.
"Overall, it was good," Gionta said. "It's still disappointing. Our game was on. We didn't give them that many opportunities. It was a pretty even game for 65 minutes."
The tension mounted as the teams entered the third period tied at 1. The Devils pressed the attack early in the period as Gionta and David Clarkson had close-in chances against Lundqvist.
Drury had a good scoring chance for the Rangers with just under 12 minutes to play, a shot from the slot that Brodeur smothered. Rangers defenseman Paul Mara charged down the wing with 6 1/2 minutes left, forcing Brodeur to make a kick save.
Lundqvist made a sprawling stop on Parise with 4 minutes left, a save that triggered a video review.
The teams swapped goals in a span of 33 seconds in the first period.
Gomez opened the scoring with his first point against his former team. Prucha unloaded a hard backhand shot that Brodeur stopped, but the rebound came out to the high slot where Gomez hammered it home at 6:01.
Johnny Oduya set up Brylin's goal by carrying the puck deep into the Rangers end and circling behind the net. Oduya then fed the puck to Brylin in the slot for the equalizer.
Both teams had solid chances in the middle portion of a scoreless second period. Lundqvist made solid stops on Michael Rupp and Gionta on back-to-back shifts before the Devils got into penalty trouble. Only five seconds after the Devils killed off one penalty, Oduya was whistled for hooking. Brodeur and the Devils held off the second wave to preserve the deadlock.
Notes: LW Sean Avery returned for the Rangers. He had been sidelined since Oct. 6 with a separated shoulder. New York D Marek Malik missed the game with back spasms. ... Devils D Karel Rachunek sat out with a groin injury. ... Lundqvist has started all 13 games for the Rangers. ... Rupp and Colton Orr fought late in the second. The sequence began with Devils D Vitaly Vishnevski knocking down Gomez with a hard check along the boards. First Avery, then Orr went after Vishnevski before Rupp intervened.
