BOSTON (AP) -The Boston Bruins held a rare team meeting after an embarrassing loss and responded with a strong effort despite missing their best defensive player.

Marc Savard had two goals and assisted on two others Saturday, helping the Bruins avoid their longest losing streak of the season with a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

On Thursday, Boston allowed 10 goals for the first time since November 1997, getting blown out 10-2 by Toronto.

"After Thursday night's game we sat here and put it all on the table," Savard said. "Teams go through that. We played two months of good hockey. We know we can do it. Guys got it out of their system."

Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara missed his first game this season with a lower body injury, but Glen Murray scored his 20th goal for Boston - his fifth straight season with 20 or more. Patrice Bergeron had the other goal for the Bruins, who lost their previous three games by a combined score of 20-3.

"It's very important," said coach Dave Lewis, who acknowledged he suggested the meeting. "It has to do with accomplishments, individual performance and it has to do with mind-set. It's easy to walk away from adversity, but you have to face it eye to eye."

Sami Kapanen scored twice for Philadelphia, which had won three of four. But the Flyers couldn't overcome Savard's key plays.

"Savard makes a living finding people with the puck and that was clearly the difference," Philadelphia coach John Stevens said.

Mike Knuble scored for the Flyers with 1:55 to play after they pulled their goalie, but they had trouble getting the puck past center ice the rest of the game.

"It was obvious how stymied we were at the end," Knuble said. "We'd get a good first rush and then we couldn't finish. They played textbook."

Tim Thomas, who made 29 saves for Boston, couldn't remember the last time he was on a team that held a meeting after a game.

"It was probably when I was playing in Finland (in 2004-2005)," he said with a smile. "I didn't know what they were saying anyway."

The Flyers took the lead on Kapanen's unassisted short-handed goal 4:11 into the game.

Boston tied it when Savard's shot from the side of the net bounced in off goalie Robert Esche at 12:28.

The Bruins took the lead 34 seconds later on Murray's goal. Murray, who got behind the Flyers' defense, collected Savard's pass alone in front and flipped a short shot by Esche.

Bergeron scored a power-play goal with 37 seconds left in the first period, one-timing Paul Mara's pass between Esche's pads.

Philadelphia, which entered on its best stretch since late November, made it 3-2 on Kapanen's second goal of the game. He collected a loose puck along the right boards, cut in front and lifted a shot under the crossbar.

Esche kept it a one-goal game with saves on P.J. Axelsson and Marco Strum about a minute apart midway into the second. Against Axelsson, Esche came sliding across the crease.

Savard, positioned at the right edge of the crease, scored off the rebound of Bergeron's shot for a power-play goal 2:21 into the third period to make it 4-2.

Notes: Boston recalled D Matt Lashoff and G Hannu Toivonen before the game, and assigned G Philippe Sauve to Providence of the AHL. ... Both teams wore Teammates for Kids patches on their jerseys. The jerseys will be auctioned off later this month with proceeds benefiting the Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation. ... The Flyers dropped to 0-22-1 when trailing after two periods.
