"We showed some character," said Yanic Perreault, who scored 2:29 into overtime to give the Coyotes a 5-4 win over the Southeast Division-leading Thrashers on Friday night.
Phoenix stretched its season-best winning streak to five games with its fourth straight road victory, including three on the current trip.
"We've been trying to get the momentum going," said Shane Doan, who had two goals, including one in the Coyotes' three-goal third period.
"We know how a roll can carry us a long way."
The Coyotes, who trailed 4-1 early in the third, forced overtime with goals by Ladislav Nagy, Doan and Owen Nolan.
"Going into overtime, we felt great," Doan said.
The Thrashers lost their second straight. Atlanta coach Bob Hartley said his team lost momentum when it was outshot 13-3 in the second period, even though the Coyotes were 0-for-4 on the power play in the period.
"It all started in the second period," Hartley said. "We took some bad penalties. We took some stupid penalties, bad is not even the word for it."
Marian Hossa, held without a goal for seven games, scored twice for Atlanta but said the loss was unacceptable.
"I don't know what happened," Hossa said. "They got a lucky goal and then after that they kept coming. They finished. We lost a point."
Hossa, tied for second in the NHL with 25 goals, hadn't scored one since Dec. 19. Ilya Kovalchuk added a goal.
"They are one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference," said Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky, who called Hossa and Kovalchuk "two of the most exciting players in the league."
Johan Hedberg allowed five goals on 31 shots. He lunged at Perreault's winning shot but couldn't keep it out of the net.
Phoenix's Curtis Joseph lost his chance at a third straight shutout when Hossa gave Atlanta a 1-0 at 13:44 of the opening period.
Joseph finished with 18 saves.
"Our chemistry has been good," Joseph said. "We're pushing each other. Guys are getting their roles defined.
"We never admit defeat. We play until the final buzzer."
Kovalchuk's breakaway goal with 6:16 left in the opening period doubled Atlanta's lead. Kovalchuk stole a pass and outraced the Phoenix skaters down the ice before shooting from between the circles.
Doan answered with an unassisted goal just under the crossbar at 1:15 of the second period to cut Atlanta's lead to 2-1.
Hossa scored his second of the game less than two minutes later when he almost skated through the left circle before scoring on a shot off Joseph's right leg.
Hossa, who leads Atlanta in goals and a team-high 58 points, has seven multi-goal games this season. He had two three-assist games during his goal drought.
Atlanta's Jon Sim and Nagy traded goals early in the third period. Sim scored his 11th from the right circle at 1:18, but Nagy's seventh goal made it 4-2 less than a minute later.
The Coyotes pulled to within 4-3 midway through the third period when Doan helped direct a shot by Travis Roche past Hedberg.
Phoenix tied it when Nolan scored with 6:39 left in regulation.
"We hung in there," Gretzky said. "They played hard. They deserve all the credit."
Notes: Thrashers LW Slava Kozlov left after he was hit in the face in the opening two minutes. He felt dizzy and didn't return. ... Thrashers D Garnet Exelby, returning from mononucleosis, played for the first time since Nov. 11. C Steve Rucchin returned after missing 10 games with a hip injury.
