TORONTO (AP) -Brendan Shanahan is thoroughly enjoying his time in New York.
Shanahan scored the only goal of the shootout and added his eighth goal of the season in regulation to lead the Rangers to a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
Shanahan scored 40 goals for Detroit last season and is off to a fast start in his first season with New York. The 19-year veteran entered the game leading the NHL in shots on goal and was tied for the most goals.
"It's been a lot of fun. I really like the group that we have in the dressing room. The coaching staff has used me in a variety of different roles, not just as a goal scorer," Shanahan said. "It's great to be involved like that."
The 37-year-old scored his 606th career goal. He tied it at 2 on the power play by banking the puck off Raycroft from the side of the net with 12 seconds left in the first.
"We were missing a player like Brendan last year - a guy strong in front of the net and who could shoot one-timers and score a lot of goals," New York captain Jaromir Jagr said. "I'm glad we have him on our team."
Nigel Dawes, Michael Nylander and Jason Ward also scored for the Rangers, who avoided their fifth loss in six games.
Mats Sundin, Alex Ponikarovsky and Darcy Tucker failed to score in the shootout before Shanahan beat goalie Andrew Raycroft with a wrist shot.
New York coach Tom Renney said Shanahan exemplifies the work habits they're looking for.
"He's not 27. He's 37 and he's smart," Renney said. "His presence in the dressing room, on the bench and on the ice is fairly formidable. He's a calming influence in a lot of ways. You have a strong man in a lot of ways wearing our colors and a lot of guys appreciate that."
Tucker scored twice, and Alex Ponikarovsky and Jeff O'Neill also had goals for the Maple Leafs, who have lost four straight to the Rangers.
O'Neill tied it at 4 with a one-timer at 17:00 of the third.
Five of Toronto's nine games have gone into overtime.
Sundin said they need to work more on the shootout in practice, but he was pleased with the effort.
"I'm really happy. We shouldn't be discouraged about this game," Sundin said. "I thought we really worked hard. In the third period we were the better team and we almost found a way to win in regulation, but we'll take the point."
Dawes' one-timer went off Raycroft and in at 5:16 of the first, but Tucker tied it by whacking the puck out of the air and past goalie Henrik Lundqvist at 11:33 of the first.
Ponikarovsky gave Toronto a 2-1 lead by skating in on a breakaway and putting a backhander past Lundqvist at 17:56 of the second.
Shanahan tied it late in the first and Nylander gave New York a 3-2 lead by tipping in Jagr's one-timer on the power play at 3:28 of the second.
Tucker scored his seventh goal of the season on the power-play goal at 6:04 of the second. Ward netted the go-ahead goal at 8:55 of the second by putting a shot past Raycroft.
Lundqvist made some nice saves in the third to preserve the lead before O'Neill tied it.
Lundqvist finished with 34 saves.
