MONTREAL (AP) - If nothing else, Bob Gainey has had a great impact on the Montreal Canadiens' special teams in two games behind the bench.

Mike Ribeiro had two goals, and the Canadiens scored on their first three power-play opportunities to beat Dallas 4-2 Monday night and end the Stars' season-high, six-game winning streak.

Alex Kovalev scored on the man advantage, and Michael Ryder had an even-strength goal for Montreal, which won for the second time in two games since Gainey, the general manager, fired coach Claude Julien on Saturday and took that job, too.

The Canadiens converted on four of five chances with the man advantage in Gainey's Canadiens coaching debut, a 6-2 win Saturday over San Jose. They were 3-for-7 against Dallas and are 7-for-12 overall with Gainey as coach.

"We're hot, and it's good that we are," said Gainey, who replaced Julien after Montreal fell into a 2-7 slide.

Jose Theodore stopped 35 shots, including 16 of 17 in the third, for the Canadiens, who begin a six-game road trip Thursday in Calgary.

"I was challenging," Theodore said of his approach. "I was in good position, so every shot was pretty much hitting me in the middle so it seemed like it was easier. I think we played really well defensively."

Jan Bulis and Radek Bonk each assisted on both of Ribeiro's first-period, power-play goals.

"The power play is just moving the puck, and when we get our chances we're scoring right now," Ribeiro said.

Niklas Hagman and Antti Miettinen scored for Dallas, which failed to register a standings point for the first time in eight games since a 3-2 loss to Los Angeles on Dec. 31 despite outshooting Montreal 37-15.

"We talked about it before the game, to stay out of the box, and it came back to bite us but for the most part I thought we outchanced them," Stars captain Mike Modano said. "They made the most of the power play."

Ribeiro, who had scored once in 29 games before netting one Saturday, connected with the man advantage for the second straight game as he beat Marty Turco 1:05 in.

Bulis extended his point streak to seven games on the goal, and combined with Bonk again at 14:42 on Ribeiro's 10th of the season.

Kovalev made it three straight power-play goals 2:41 into the second to put the Canadiens up 3-0.

Dallas finally got one past Jose Theodore at 4:27 to draw within 3-1 as Bill Guerin's backhand deflected off Hagman's skate as he was wrestling for position in front of the net with Canadiens defenseman Mark Streit.

Ryder scored his team-leading 19th at 7:50 to make it 4-1.

Miettinen drew Dallas back within two 13:51 into the third with his seventh of the season.

Notes: Former Stars assistant GM Guy Carbonneau was behind the bench for his second game as Montreal's associate coach. Carbonneau was hired by Gainey on Saturday after getting permission from Dallas GM Doug Armstrong, who was previously Gainey's assistant GM with Dallas. Carbonneau, who won two Stanley Cups in Montreal and one with Dallas, will take over as the Canadiens' head coach next season. ... Canadiens captain Saku Koivu earned his 300th career assist on Ryder's goal. ... Jaroslav Svoboda and Nathan Perrott were scratched by Dallas.
