UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Martin Gerber and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the New York Islanders from start to finish.

Gerber made 30 saves for his sixth career shutout, and the Hurricanes scored three goals in a 6:14 span in the second period to beat the Islanders 3-0 on Saturday night for a home-and-home sweep.

``We came out good from the start,'' Gerber said. ``We played a solid 60 minutes, and we made good decisions with the puck all night.

Gerber's closest call came 4 minutes into the third period when he got his pad on Oleg Kvasha's one-timer. Gerber has three shutouts this season, all on the road.

``I don't think it matters where this kid plays,'' Carolina coach Peter Laviolette said. ``He's been rock solid for us all year, and he was rock solid again tonight.''

Rod Brind'Amour, Ray Whitney and Cory Stillman scored for Carolina, which beat the Islanders 4-1 on Friday night in Raleigh. The Hurricanes have earned at least one point in 13 of their last 15 games.

Wade Dubielewicz stopped 25 shots for the Islanders, who are back under .500 at home (9-10-1) and have lost seven of their last eight games overall.

``I feel bad for Dubie,'' Islanders forward Mark Parrish said. ``The bottom line is that they worked harder than us.''

Carolina scored on three of its first four shots in the second period.

Brind'Amour opened the scoring on a power play at 2:58, scoring his 18th goal of the season on a backhander. Whitney made it 2-0 at 7:18 on a one-timer from the right circle that beat Dubielewicz to the far corner.

Then, 17 seconds into a power play, Stillman extended his points streak to 11 games with a tip at 9:12. Stillman has scored goals in five straight games, and has seven goals and 12 assists during his points streak.

``I think that most of my points come because the team is playing well,'' Stillman said. ``What also helps is that here in Carolina, we play the same style of offense as I did in Tampa Bay. It's an aggressive offense with puck pressure, so I feel like I fit right in here.''

Laviolette said that Stillman's presence is not just his own offensive contributions.

``He not only has the knack for scoring,'' Laviolette said, ``but he also helps make other players better offensively.''

Islanders coach Steve Stirling has had problems with his team's lack of effort over the course of a full game, yet it's the only way the Islanders can break their slump.

``You don't get out of a slump by luck,'' Stirling said. ``You get out of it by hard work.''

Notes: The Islanders took the ice with only 17 skaters, one under the limit. Because there were seven defensemen in the mix, rookie Tomi Pettinen spent his ice time at forward. Eric Godard was suspended for two games, and forward Kevin Colley is still bothered by a sore knee. ... The Hurricanes have 58 points, the most in franchise history after 41 games. Their previous high was 46 in 1986-87 in Hartford.
