ATLANTA (AP) - Sami Kapanen gave the Philadelphia Flyers yet another road victory.

The Flyers have opened an 11-game trip with three straight wins - each by one goal - including a 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers on Wednesday night when Kapanen scored 13 seconds into overtime.

Kapanen scored on a close-range tip-in off a pass from Michal Handzus.

The Flyers, on the longest trip in team history and the longest in the NHL this season, have won five straight road games overall.

"Obviously, it's tough playing that many games on the road," Kapanen said. "It helps that we won the first three games. It gives us confidence for the long stretch."

Kapanen was open for his shot as Atlanta's defense focused on Handzus.

"I kind of faked a shot," Handzus said. "Kapanen made a great play."

Atlanta rookie goalie Michael Garnett called the pass and winning shot "just an amazing play that I don't think anyone could have stopped."

Philadelphia is 8-0-1 in its last nine road games.

"Every game has been so tight," Flyers forward Mike Knuble said. "It's a bounce here or there and we have been getting the bounce."

Added Knuble: "It's timely goals and timely goaltending. We are getting used to playing in tight games and coming out on top."

Atlanta lost for only the second time in its last seven games, but it fell to 2-6 in overtime and shootouts.

The Thrashers have earned a point in a franchise-record nine straight games, in which they are 6-0-3.

"I thought the effort was good," Thrashers coach Bob Hartley said. "I think we lost our focus in the second period when we could of put the Flyers away."

The Thrashers took a 3-2 lead midway through the second period, but Philadelphia came back to pull even late in the period.

Garnett's two-game shutout streak ended less than 3 minutes into the game on Simon Gagne's 26th goal. Gagne emerged from a pack in the left circle fighting for the puck with his back to the net before firing blindly for the goal.

"Garnett wasn't as sharp on a couple of goals, but he is a young goalie," Hartley said.

Garnett has started 16 straight games but the Thrashers now have Kari Lehtonen back from a groin injury. Hartley said he now has to pick a starter for the Thrashers' next game.

Niclas Havelid's third goal of the season midway through the opening period tied the game for Atlanta at 1-1, and about 2 minutes later Eric Boulton gave the Thrashers a 2-1 lead by winning a battle in front of the Flyers' net.

The Flyers pulled even at 2-2 late in the first period on Brian Savage's second goal. Savage's shot in front of the net sparked a brief fight between Atlanta's Garnet Exelby and Philadelphia's Mike Richards.

The Thrashers reclaimed the lead midway through the second period on a short-handed goal by Andy Sutton, his second. With less than 7 minutes left in the period, Handzus earned an assist with a pass from behind Atlanta's net that set up a goal by Branko Radivojevic for a 3-3 tie.

Notes: Havelid's goal gave him 100 career points. He is in his sixth season. ... The Flyers assigned C Kiel McLeod, acquired Wednesday from Phoenix, to the Philadelphia Phantoms of the American Hockey League. The Flyers sent right wing Eric Chouinard to the Coyotes. ... Atlanta's home game against Ottawa on Monday has been rescheduled for a 3 p.m. start. ... The Thrashers' short-handed goal was the first allowed by the Flyers on the road since Jan. 31, 2004, at Pittsburgh.
