BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) _ Alexander Mogilny's milestone moment couldn't have come at a better time.

Mogilny had three assists, including his 1,000th NHL point, and Tomas Kaberle scored with 1:15 remaining in overtime to cap a stirring comeback for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who defeated the Buffalo Sabres 6-5 Monday night.

Mogilny's wrist shot from the right point, with Toronto goaltender Trevor Kidd pulled for an extra attacker, deflected off Gary Roberts and past Martin Biron for his 26th goal of the season with 37.2 seconds remaining in regulation to tie it.

The assist gave Mogilny 1,000 career NHL points.

``It means a lot,'' Mogilny said of the milestone. ``It definitely feels good right now.''

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Maple Leafs, who moved into a fourth-place tie with Ottawa in the Eastern Conference with 90 points.

``Certainly it was a big win for us,'' Mogilny said.

Things certainly looked bleak after two periods for the Maple Leafs. Buffalo held a 5-2 lead after two periods on J.P. Dumont's goal with a two-man advantage and just 7.4 seconds remaining.

But Toronto came out for the third with the philosophy of trying to keep things simple by trying to create traffic in front of Biron while throwing pucks at the net.

The Maple Leafs broke through 4{ minutes into the third when Owen Nolan scored the first of his two goals.

Nolan made it 5-4 with 5:02 remaining, putting the Sabres on their heels.

``We just kept pressing,'' Nolan said. ``When you get the puck to the net good things happen.''

Jochen Hecht had two goals and two assists, Miroslav Satan added a goal and three assists, J.P. Dumont had a goal and two assists and Daniel Briere added a goal and an assist for the Sabres. Buffalo gained one point on the New York Islanders and are four points behind for eighth place and the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

Buffalo has 10 games remaining, the Islanders have 11.

The Sabres missed a great opportunity to catch the Islanders over their last three games, but were unable to hold leads against Boston and then Monday against Toronto. Buffalo lost all three of the games in overtime, and squandered three potential points.

``We're playing good, we just can't finish,'' Hecht said. ``We can't afford to lose the points. We should be able to hang onto those points.''

After Buffalo jumped to a 2-0 lead, Mats Sundin scored twice in a 3:16 span at the end of the first period.

``When we're successful we try to keep it simple,'' Sundin said. ``As the game went on that was enough to win it.''

Kidd made 23 saves for his first win since Feb. 5 against Ottawa.

Biron made 28 saves in making his seventh straight start (3-4).

``We just didn't give up,'' Kidd said. ``There was some frustration but we were actually just looking to do something positive in the third to get ready for tomorrow's game.''

The Sabres lost their captain Chris Drury nine minutes into the first period after he sustained a mild concussion.

Drury, who entered the game as the team's third-leading scorer with 45 points, was driven into the ice by Toronto center Joe Nieuwendyk after Nieuwendyk knocked down Satan with a cross-check during a scrum in front of the Toronto net. Nieuwendyk received a minor penalty for roughing Satan.

``I thought what Nieuwendyk did is on the lines of a suspension,'' Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. ``The guy has his helmet off and he fell on him and pounded his head into the ice. It was a gutless play on his part.''

Brian Leetch had three assists and Bryan McCabe two assists for the Maple Leafs.

``Our guys fought hard to come back,'' Toronto coach Pat Quinn said. ``That's the kind of hockey that's going to excite the fans.''
