GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) _ Matthew Barnaby helped keep the Colorado Avalanche in the hunt for home-ice in the playoffs.

Barnaby and Paul Kariya scored power-play goals, and the Colorado Avalanche beat Phoenix 3-2 Friday night, extending the Coyotes' winless streak to 11 games.

Andrei Nikolishin also scored for the Avalanche, who won for the fourth time in five games to move within a point of idle Detroit for the best record in the Western Conference.

``That's the goal,'' said Barnaby, who scored on a redirection with 17:12 remaining. ``Every game we go in with that in mind. It has been an emotional week and our guys have battled hard.''

The Avalanche completed a sweep of their three-game road trip, the last two games coming after Todd Bertuzzi's hit on Steve Moore in Vancouver.

``It was a crazy week but an important stretch,'' Colorado coach Tony Granato said. ``This is the time you get your playoff game face on and start doing the little things you need to do to be successful in the playoffs.''

Krystofer Kolanos scored for the first time in four months, and Mike Comrie added a short-handed goal for the Coyotes, 0-7-2-2 in their last 11 games and 2-15-3-3 since consecutive wins over San Jose and Detroit in late January.

Phoenix is 0-6-1-2 since interim coach Rick Bowness took over for Bobby Francis on Feb. 24, and 4-12-4-3 since moving to Glendale Arena on Dec. 27.

The Coyotes were without leading scorer Shane Doan, out with a charley horse sustained in Wednesday's 3-1 loss to Los Angeles.

``There is effort and there is competing,'' Bowness said. ``There's a difference. I was disappointed with the way a couple of the young guys were competing. But in time they'll weed themselves out of here. If you don't want to compete and get your nose dirty you won't be here next year when we're healthy.''

Kolanos pulled the Coyotes even at 1-1 at 3:02 of the second period on a shot from the right point that glanced off Joe Sakic's stick and fluttered past goalie David Aebischer.

But Nikolishin put the Avalanche in front for good 90 seconds later, stuffing a rebound between goalie Brent Johnson's pads as he attempted to cover the puck.

Barnaby made it 3-1 with 17:12 remaining when he redirected a shot from the point by John-Michael Liles.

Comrie cut the lead to 3-2 with 39 seconds remaining on a short wrist shot off a faceoff in the Colorado zone.

``I think I probably should have had that one,'' Aebischer said. ``I didn't react the way I wanted to. I was leaning a little bit and he took advantage of it.''

Kariya opened the scoring at 6:48 of the first, backhanding a rebound past Johnson as he fell to his knees in front of the crease.
