CHICAGO (AP) _ Olaf Kolzig's latest shutout went very smoothly, even though he faced 38 shots.

``We gave up a lot of shots, but they weren't two-on-ones, three-on-ones type of stuff,'' said Kolzig, who posted his 33rd career shutout in the Washington Capitals' 4-0 victory Sunday over the Chicago Blackhawks. ``We gave up perimeter shots. It's the goalie's job to stop it.

``We did a great job of clearing the puck. That's the way we need to play. We need to play really strong in front of our own net.''

Peter Bondra and Stephen Peat scored 65 seconds apart early in the second period to give the Capitals a 2-0 lead. Matt Pettinger and Anson Carter added goals in the third to help Washington snap a three-game winless streak.

``What made us successful was we kept it simple,'' Peat said. ``We just moved the puck forward. We created a forecheck and that creates turnovers. That's kind of dummy-proof hockey.''

Craig Anderson made 29 saves for the Blackhawks, whose season-best, three-game winning streak ended. The Blackhawks defeated Boston 2-1 in overtime at home on Saturday while the Capitals watched from the stands.

``It might have been a little bit of an emotional letdown when you play against the Boston Bruins and Joe Thornton the day before,'' Chicago's Scott Nichol said. ``But (the Capitals) are right down there where we are. Tonight, I think they got the bounces and their goalie played real well.''

Chicago is 15th in the Western Conference. Washington is 14th in the East.

Bondra opened the scoring at 5:34 of the second with a power-play goal. He lofted in a loose rebound past Anderson, who was down after making a save on Sergei Gonchar's drive from the blue line.

Peat made it a two-goal advantage when he fired a shot between Anderson's legs from the slot. Peat was left uncovered and took a pass from Rick Berry.

An apparent goal by Washington's Joel Kwiatkowski with 1:15 left in the second was disallowed by referee Dan O'Rourke. Anderson slid back into the net with the puck under his pads, but O'Rourke ruled the puck didn't completely cross the goal line.

Pettinger made it 3-0 at 2:07 of the third. He slipped free of Chicago's coverage just short of the crease and swept Brian Willsie's pass into an open net.

Kolzig stopped Chicago's Steve Sullivan on a breakaway at 6:38 of the third.

Carter completed the scoring with 1:50 left on a two-on-none break with Robert Lang.
