DALLAS (AP) _ The Dallas Stars were looking for an ugly goal with less than 10 seconds left in regulation, and Bill Guerin delivered.
Guerin scored with 6.2 seconds remaining and the Stars stretched their unbeaten streak to eight games with a 4-4 tie with the New York Islanders on Wednesday night.
Rookie Trent Hunter gave the Islanders a 4-3 edge with 1:47 remaining on his 20th goal. Hunter scored on a backhand rebound off a shot by Oleg Kvasha, who had a goal and three assists.
But Guerin poked a loose puck past goaltender Garth Snow with time winding down for his 23rd of the season off a scramble in front of the cage. Video replay upheld the goal after officials determined Guerin didn't kick the puck into the net.
``When you're down a goal like that, you're doing anything you can to get one back,'' said Pierre Turgeon, who assisted on Guerin's goal. ``With only a little time left, you're just trying to crash the net, get traffic in front of the goalie and get the puck to the net.''
Guerin felt confident the goal would count.
``We were all pretty positive it was a goal,'' Guerin said. ``We deserved it, because we played pretty hard tonight.''
Turgeon's power-play goal with 5:18 left in regulation had pulled the Stars into a 3-3 tie.
Dallas is 6-0-2 in its last eight. The Islanders are 7-2-3-1 in their last 13.
Kvasha sent the Islanders ahead 3-2 when he took possession of a loose puck in the Dallas zone, skated into the slot and scored his 12th goal. The Stars turned over the puck when Sergei Zubov's pass glanced off the skate of defense partner Philippe Boucher.
Dallas, returning from six days off for the All-Star break, got a point for the tie to pull within four points of first-place San Jose in the Pacific Division.
``We wanted to build on the momentum we had before the break,'' said Stars coach Dave Tippett. ``We did some good things, but we also have some things to work on. We had some guys who stepped up and gave us a couple of key plays to get us a point. We have to address the negative side and build on the positives.''
Snow had 31 saves, 19 in the first period, for the Islanders, who came back from the break on Tuesday night with a 1-1 tie at Colorado.
Marty Turco stopped 19 shots for Dallas.
The Stars had the game's first 16 shots until Shawn Bates got off a shorthanded attempt for the Islanders with 7:43 left in the opening period.
Dallas finally got one past Snow on Boucher's shot from the right point. The Stars had 20 shots in the opening period, their most this season in any period, while the Islanders had four.
``It wasn't a good period for us, but we weathered the storm and they only got one,'' Islanders coach Steve Stirling said.
The Islanders came out with more fire in the second period, getting the first five shots and tying it on Arron Asham's rebound at 2:02.
David Oliver sent the Stars in front with his sixth goal of the season, but the Islanders tied it on Mariusz Czerkawski's 18th of the season.
The line of Hunter, Kvasha and Czerkawski had a big night, combining for three goals and seven assists.
``We played together well, we got some excitement and some good chances,'' Czerkawski said. ``But it's kind of tough to talk about that with them scoring with six seconds left. Give them credit, they were all over us.''
