CALGARY, Alberta (AP) _ Goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff picked up where he left off with the Calgary Flames.

Kiprusoff stopped 23 shots to lead Calgary to a 5-2 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers on Tuesday night. The game was Kiprusoff's first since being injured in December and improved his record to 12-3-2 this season.

``They played great,'' Kiprusoff said of his teammates. ``Atlanta scored two goals early, but we kept going just like always.''

Dean McAmmond and Jarome Iginla had two goals apiece for the Flames, who extended the Thrashers' winless streak to nine games (0-7-2).

The Flames were nine games above .500 when Kiprusoff sprained his knee Dec. 29. Without Kiprusoff, Calgary compiled a 7-10-2 record with Roman Turek and Jamie McLennan splitting goaltending duties.

``It's great to have him back,'' said Iginla. ``He's a very good goaltender and it's great to see him get a win tonight.''

With the score tied 2-2, McAmmond got the winner with 6:41 remaining in regulation.

After Pasi Nurminen made successive saves off Iginla and Rhett Warrener, the puck popped out to McAmmond in the high slot. He fired a shot through the goalie's pads.

``That's our story, we hang in there for two periods and then it seems like we give away the game,'' said Atlanta right winger Ron Petrovicky. ``Those are little mistakes that cost you games and we have to learn from them and don't do them again next game.''

Matthew Lombardi also scored for Calgary.

``We had struggled defensively for 15 games before the All-Star break, but for the last couple games we've started to play better in front of our goaltender,'' said Iginla, who has 26 goals this season.

Iginla's two goals came in the final five minutes, the second into an empty net.

``It's a huge win, a big momentum booster for us,'' said Flames defenseman Denis Gauthier.

Ilya Kovalchuk had both goals for Atlanta (21-28-6-2), which has lost five straight and kicked off a seven-game road trip.

Kiprusoff, under Atlanta pressure in the early going, was beaten for the opening goal just 1:35 in. Petrovicky's shot was stopped by Kiprusoff, but Kovalchuk put in the rebound.

McAmmond tied it 10 minutes later, but the Thrashers regained the lead in the final minute of the period while on a 5-on-3 power-play.

Atlanta's Dany Heatley, playing in his hometown for the first time since his Sept. 29 car accident that killed teammate Dan Snyder, had an assist.

Working the power-play from his customary position at the point, Heatley slipped a pass to Kovalchuk at the faceoff circle. Kovalchuk's shot squeezed through Kiprusoff's pads.

``This hockey team, we need wins right now, and we're not getting them,'' Heatley said. ``It's disappointing.''

Calgary tied the game 2-2 on the only goal of the second period when Lombardi converted a pass from Chris Clark.
