BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Bruins did more than dress like their predecessors from the 1970s. They played that way, too.

Sergei Samsonov scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Bruins past the New York Rangers 5-2 Monday for their sixth win in seven games.

Both teams wore vintage-style uniforms from the 1970s, a decade when Boston made the Stanley Cup finals five times and won it all twice.

The Bruins shook off a 4-0 loss to Ottawa on Saturday by scoring twice in the opening 5:14, and improved to 7-1-1-0 since Jan. 1 and 5-0-1-0 in their last six home games.

Joe Thornton put Boston ahead 1-0 with a power-play goal 2:03 into the first period, burying a rebound for his 11th goal of the season. The Bruins pushed their lead to 2-0 about three minutes later. Brian Rolston took a feed from Nick Boynton at center ice for a breakaway and scored his 13th goal of the season on a backhanded flip after faking out Mike Dunham.

"Anytime you can get off to a two-goal lead like that is a huge boost for your team," Boston coach Mike Sullivan said. "After coming away from Ottawa without scoring, I think its a boost confidence-wise for our players."

Glen Murray put Boston ahead 3-0 in the second period with a wrister from the circle.

The Bruins resembled the teams from its 1970s heyday for another reason -- by picking up 35 penalty minutes and two game-misconducts during a 2:29 stretch midway through the second, which started after Eric Lindros knocked Thornton out of the game with a cut above his right eye.

Boston's Doug Doull received a game misconduct for charging at Petr Nedved, and Dan McGillis also was sent off for kneeing Darius Kasparaitis.

"What do you expect from a player like that? He goes out there to hurt people," Nedved said about Doull. "If I had the puck I'd salute him, but I didn't have the puck."

The Bruins survived a subsequent five-minute power play, including 3:49 when New York had a two-man advantage. Chris Simon got New York on the board later in the second, but Samsonov answered with his 10th goal of the season about two minutes later.

Jiri Slger, in his first game for the Bruins since being acquired from Vancouver on Saturday, scored in the third.

Lindros completed the scoring with his 10th goal of the season with 9:10 left.

Andrew Raycroft made 34 saves for Boston, the 19th time in 29 complete games this season in which he's allowed two goals or fewer.

"Let's not forget we won five in a row before Ottawa. We feel confident in here, comfortable. We came and had a good start and that had us going," Raycroft said.

Thornton went to hospital following the hit for X-rays on his eye, and Kasparaitis did not return. Both teams expect a heated game Tuesday when they meet again at Madison Square Garden.

"Our guy is going to have to miss some games because of his knee. Another guy (Nedved) might have a concussion," New York coach Glen Sather said. "They didn't have to go to that extreme."
