CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- Two unexpected sources provided all of the offense for the Colorado Avalanche.

Peter Worrell and Steve Moore scored their first goals of the season, and David Aebischer made 30 saves as the Avalanche beat the Calgary Flames 2-1 Wednesday night.

"We can't rely on Joe (Sakic) and Peter (Forsberg)'s line all the time because every night, every team is going out there to stop them," Worrell said. "We've got some good players on other lines and we have to be able to chip in."

Moore's goal put the Avalanche ahead 2-0 at 17:07 of the first period as he neatly converted a two-on-one rush.

Dan Hinote carried the puck into the Calgary zone and drew Flames defenseman Rhett Warrener to the ice before sliding a pass in front to Moore, who slid the puck through Jamie McLennan's pads.

Moore's first goal came in his 36th NHL game.

"Great pass by Danny," Moore said. "He took the defenseman with him and I guess he heard me yelling from behind as he made a great pass through the defenseman and I was able to get it past the goalie."

Aebischer improved to 15-7-5.

"He's playing good for us right now," Colorado defenseman Adam Foote said. "He's focused and giving us a chance to win. We're fortunate to have him back there for us playing the way he is."

Colorado won for just the second time in nine games (2-3-4) and moved into a second-place tie with the Flames in the Northwest Division.

Colorado is unbeaten in seven trips to Calgary (4-0-3). Rhett Warrener scored for the Flames.

"We're in a situation where we're in a dog fight in the standings. It's so darn close between 10th spot and fourth spot," McLennan said. "We're playing teams that are in our conference and in our division and in our building and we've got to get the points."

McLennan made 29 saves in his first start for the Flames in place of Miikka Kiprusoff, who will be out four to six weeks because of a sprained knee.

Kiprusoff was 11-3-2 and led the NHL in goals-against average (1.48) and save percentage (.941). He was injured in the first period of Calgary's 2-2 tie with Minnesota on Monday night.

"It's certainly a big blow for us, he's played so well and the team's played so well," McLennan said. "But we've dealt with adversity before. We've dealt with Roman (Turek) going down, we've lost Craig Conroy, we lost (Steven) Reinprecht and you name it right down the line. We'll deal with Kipper going down."

Calgary's No. 1 goaltender Roman Turek, who has been out with an injury, is back practicing with the team and is expected to return within 10 to 14 days.

The Flames had two power-play chances in the third period but failed to score on either. They were 0-for-4 for the game and 1-for-47 the past 11 games.

Calgary cut the deficit in half 2:50 into the second period on Warrener's goal while the Avalanche were on a power play.

Chris Clark forced a turnover deep in the Colorado end and after Warrener's initial shot was knocked down in front, Warrener got the puck again and wristed a shot past Aebischer inside the far post.

Colorado opened the scoring at 8:10 of the first period when Worrell deflected John-Michael Liles' shot from the blue line for his first goal of the season.

It was the first goal in 28 games for Worrell, dating to Jan. 24.
