Toronto Maple Leafs 2, Washington Capitals 2 FINAL OT

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Trevor Kidd was playing his second game of the season. Olaf Kolzig was back after a badly needed two-game rest.

Both were stellar Friday night, allowing no goals over the final 33 minutes despite solid scoring chances at both ends. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals settled for a 2-2 tie.

The Maple Leafs extended their franchise-record points streak to 13, despite more bad injury news. Right wing Darcy Tucker was hit in the foot by a puck in the third period and will be day-to-day, and coach Pat Quinn said Tomas Kaberle's recent shoulder injury will keep the defensemen out eight to 10 days.

"It's puzzling how this can continue to happen," said Quinn, whose team has overcome recent injuries to Alexander Mogilny, Owen Nolan, Gary Roberts, Joe Nieuwendyk and Nik Antropov. "It's discouraging."

Alexei Ponikarovsky and Mats Sundin scored for the Maple Leafs, and Kidd made 25 saves in place of usual starter Ed Belfour.

"I think I said to myself with about five minutes to go to buckle down," Kidd said. "I tried to batten down the hatches a little bit."

The Capitals got power-play goals from Kip Miller and Dainius Zubrus. Kolzig, who has the lowest goals-against-average among all regular goalies, looked more like his old self and made 32 stops.

"Olie is hard on himself, but he is the backbone of the team," right wing Mike Grier said. "We have confidence in him. He made two huge saves at the end. Hopefully, this will give him confidence."

The final goal was Zubrus' score at 11:46 of the second period, but the chances kept coming, especially in an overtime that included a power play for each team.

Roberts came the closest to getting the game-winner, hitting the post in the extra period.

The Maple Leafs are 11-0-1-1 during their points streak. The tie broke a six-game road winning streak, one short of the franchise record.

The Capitals are 2-1-2 under new coach Glen Hanlon.

"Our execution seems to be getting better and better each game," Hanlon said. "The energy level's been there from the start; we've sustained that. You sort of put those two things together, and I don't think there's any limits for this hockey club."

The Capitals played without Jaromir Jagr, who missed his second straight game because of a lacerated thumb. Defenseman Brendan Witt missed his fifth in a row with a shoulder injury.

Ponikarovsky put in his own rebound for the only goal of the first period. The Capitals tied it on Miller's power-play rebound in the second, a goal set up by Robert Lang's hard work along the boards.

The Maple Leafs needed only 14 seconds to retake the lead. Sundin took Roberts' pass and skated around defenseman Jason Doig to beat Kolzig, who punched the air in frustration.

Kolzig made a fabulous right-leg save on Tucker's slap shot midway through the second period, allowing the Capitals to tie the score again two minutes later. Kidd deflected Miller's pass to Zubrus, who poked the puck just under the crossbar from point-blank range.
