UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -- It took a while, but the New York Islanders found a team in a worse slump than theirs.

Alexei Yashin scored twice and Dave Scatchard returned from a shoulder injury to register a goal and assist, helping the New York Islanders snap their seven-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory Saturday night over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Chicago is winless in 13 games (0-9-1-3) and has lost eight straight -- all but one in regulation.

"I just tried to keep it simple and have some fun again," Scatchard said after his return from a separated shoulder sustained Oct. 18. "I realized after being away for so long just how much I missed it."

A crowd of only 3,683, held down because of a snowstorm that blanketed the Northeast, saw Scatchard's fifth game of the season. He recovered just in time for the slumping Islanders, who had their biggest offensive output since beating Ottawa 6-3 on Nov. 3.

Trent Hunter and Eric Cairns also scored for New York, which beat the Blackhawks at home for just the second time in 20 meetings (2-11-7-0).

"It was an absolute plus that he scored his first goal of the season in his first game back," Islanders forward Jason Blake said of Scatchard. "He brings a lot of energy to the game."

Rick DiPietro made 21 saves and ended his five-game losing streak.

Mark Bell and Tyler Arnason scored for the Blackhawks, who haven't won since beating Nashville on Nov. 7. Craig Anderson stopped 28 shots but fell to 0-8-2 in his NHL career.

"We know it's up to 13 now," Chicago defenseman Steve Poapst said of the streak. "It's the guys in this room that are going to have to turn it around."

Bell gave the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead just 4:08 in with a turnaround wrist shot.

Yashin tied it at 8:15. Anderson stopped his initial shot, but Yashin fired a shot that deflected in off Anderson.

"It was the first time in a while where we gave up the first goal and didn't hang our heads," Islanders coach Steve Stirling said. "We had a little more sense of urgency."

Scatchard scored his first of the season to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead at 8:25 of the second. He swept the rebound of Mariusz Czerkawski's shot past Anderson.

That was also Scatchard's first point this season. He also drew an assist on Hunter's ninth goal at 17:32.

"He competes hard, he can score, and he has a little jam to his game," Stirling said. "He's just a big, strong center ice man."

The Islanders added to their lead with two goals early in the third period. Yashin scored his third goal in two games, following a 12-game drought, 84 seconds into the period. Cairns then beat Anderson at 3:32 to make it 5-1.

"It seems we make one or two more mistakes than the other team," Poapst said. "We hit three posts, and if those go a quarter-inch in the other direction, the result certainly could have been different."

Arnason closed the scoring at 5:37.
