MONTREAL (AP) -- Stephane Quintal had a unique way of celebrating the Montreal Canadiens' latest success.
Jose Theodore made 25 saves, and Andreas Dackell, Michael Ryder and Saku Koivu scored to lead Montreal to a 3-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night.
Quintal was given 35 minutes in penalties, including a match penalty for attempting to injure, and a game misconduct for his fight with Carolina's Bob Boughner after the final whistle.
The Canadiens defenseman tried to knee Boughner, who got a fighting major, in the leg during the spirited scrap. The incident will be reviewed by the NHL.
"When he came after me, he wasn't looking at me so I thought, `We're not going to fight,"' Quintal said. "It kind of surprised me. He pulled me and he tried to get me with the first punch. That's why I was mad.
"If you want to fight me, I'll fight you, but just tell me. I'll fight you fair. I don't think it was fair of him to try to grab me. I tried to fight him (Friday) and he didn't want to fight, so I was kind of surprised."
The Canadiens extended their season-high unbeaten streak to five games (3-0-2).
"They came out and hit hard and we weren't prepared. It was just a lot of frustration boiling over," Boughner said. "We should have brought that intensity ourselves and I think it was a lot of frustration boiling over at the end."
Theodore stopped 36 of 37 Carolina shots in a 1-1 road tie Friday.
"We just want to build on it and keep on improving," Theodore said. "(Friday) night we weren't happy with the game we played so we came back tonight and I think we deserved the win. We dominated compared to last night."
Hurricanes goalie Kevin Weekes, who stopped 26 of 27 shots Friday, made 23 saves for Carolina. The Hurricanes, winless in three games, held a players-only meeting after falling to 2-8-3 on the road.
"We needed to talk about things that we had to talk about as a team," Carolina defenseman Bret Hedican said. "It's got nothing to do with anybody else but the 22 guys in this dressing room."
Theodore came within 8:16 of a shutout, but allowed Danny Markov's power-play goal that cut Montreal's lead to 2-1.
Ryder, who scored midway through the third, got his second point of the game when he assisted on Koivu's goal later in the period that restored Montreal's two-goal lead.
Dackell scored his first goal in 10 games in the first period, and Ryder got his sixth of the season midway through the third to put the Canadiens up 2-0. Niklas Sundstrom assisted on both goals.
Markov scored his third of the season 1:51 after Ryder's goal at 11:44.
Koivu got his second goal in three games at 13:26 after failing to score in his first 11 games.
Montreal improved to 11-2-2-1 when it scores first.
Canadiens right wing Richard Zednik, who had six goals in eight games, missed the game to be with his girlfriend for the birth of their first child. Left wing Jan Bulis took Zednik's place on Montreal's top line, drawing an assist on Koivu's goal.
Dackell opened the scoring 17:23 in when he came out from behind the net to get Steve Begin's rebound and put the puck between Weekes' pads.
Ryder made it 2-0 at 9:53 of the third with a shot that trickled through Weekes' legs.
