RED WINGS (14-8-7) at DEVILS (11-12-6)
TV: RDS, FS-D, MSG PLUS
Last 10: Detroit 5-3-2; New Jersey 5-4-1
Season series: The first of three games. The teams will have a home-and-home set March 4 (in New Jersey) and March 7 (in Detroit). In the only meeting in 2011-12, the New Jersey Devils won 2-1 at Joe Louis Arena behind Martin Brodeur's 23 saves.
Big story: In a 6-3 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday, the Detroit Red Wings were minus injured forwards Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg for the first time since April 18, 2006. The Red Wings also lost that 2006 game by a 6-3 score, to the Nashville Predators. Datsyuk has missed five games with a concussion, Zetterberg is out with a herniated disc, and Darren Helm will miss this weekend's games after an MRI exam revealed fluid in his shoulder. Detroit had its four-game winning streak snapped by Philadelphia.
The Devils, who will visit Madison Square Garden on Saturday to face the New York Rangers, are coming off back-to-back losses to the Montreal Canadiens.
Red Wings: Tomas Tatar scored twice and Johan Franzen once in the loss to the Flyers. Goalie Jimmy Howard made 28 saves. The Flyers scored three power-play goals for the first time since Feb. 23, 2013, when they posted three in a 5-3 win against the Winnipeg Jets. The loss was the second by Detroit against Philadelphia at Joe Louis Arena in the past 25 years.
"In the end I thought we had things going pretty good for ourselves through two. The third period wasn't good enough, they were better than us," coach Mike Babcock said. "They were better than us because they lit us up on the power play."
Devils: In a 4-3 shootout loss to the Canadiens on Wednesday, rookie Reid Boucher, making his NHL debut after being recalled from the team's American Hockey League affiliate in Albany, scored for the Devils in the tiebreaker to snap a string of 14 straight missed chances this season. Boucher also had an assist in the game. The Devils failed to hold leads of 2-1 and 3-2 in the third period.
"I'm disappointed for our group," coach Peter DeBoer said. "I thought we deserved two points in probably both of the games [against the Canadiens]. To come out with one out of four, obviously, isn't good enough in the standings. But, from how we played six games in 10 nights, I thought we started slow and once we got into the game halfway through the first period, I thought we played a good game."
The Devils dropped to 0-5 in shootouts this season and are 0-9 dating to last season. Center Adam Henrique returned to the lineup after having to leave the game Monday after two periods in Montreal with a lower-body injury.
Who's hot: Franzen has three goals and nine points in the past seven games for the Red Wings. … Devils forward Michael Ryder has goals in back-to-back games.
Injury report: New Jersey defensemen Adam Larsson (lower body) and Bryce Salvador (non-displaced stress fracture in foot) and forwards Ryan Carter (leg), Stephen Gionta (ankle) and Ryane Clowe (head) are on injured reserve. … Detroit is without forwards Zetterberg (back), Datsyuk (concussion), Darren Helm (shoulder) and Todd Bertuzzi (shoulder) and defenseman Danny DeKeyser (shoulder).
