Rangers seek first win against Kings
New York Rangers vs. Los Angeles Kings

RANGERS (0-1-0) at KINGS (1-1-0)

TV: MSG, FS-W

Season series: These teams haven't met at Staples Center since Feb. 2, 2010. The last meeting came exactly two years ago (Oct. 7, 2011) when the Los Angeles Kings defeated the New York Rangers in overtime in Stockholm, Sweden.

Big story: Both teams will be looking to bounce back from a loss to a non-playoff team from last season, while Rangers coach Alain Vigneault is in search of his first victory at his new post.

Team scope:

Rangers: Vigneault's debut in Phoenix was a dud, but the Rangers could have captain Ryan Callahan back after missing only one game to start the season. He and fellow forward Carl Hagelin were both projected to miss time at the start of the season because of injuries, but Callahan's early return would be a boost.

"He missed time, even in the summer, because he had to rest and recover," Brian Boyle told Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. "But knowing [Callahan], he’s going to come out and try to run through a wall. He looks great. He’s been working his butt off."

Rangers defenseman Marc Staal had the team's lone goal in a 4-1 loss to the Coyotes. It was Staal's first game back since being hit in the eye with a puck March 5 against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Kings: Los Angeles defeated the Minnesota Wild in a shootout on opening night and started strong Friday against Winnipeg, scoring first and outshooting the Jets 18-7. But the Jets then poured in four straight goals, chasing Jonathan Quick en route to a 5-3 victory.

"I didn't feel like I was fighting it," Quick told Lisa Dillman of the Los Angeles Times. "They get three cheesy ones and the puck is rolling. I think if you ask the shooters they didn't know where it was going. There's three right there for you, and they get one underneath me.

"I didn't hear a whistle. So I thought it was around me. I start looking around for it and it was underneath me. Obviously if you give up four goals, you've got to [get] better. We've got work to do."

Injury report: Both Hagelin and Callahan had shoulder surgery in the offseason. The Rangers sent J.T. Miller to Hartford of the American Hockey League on Saturday, which could indicate a spot in the lineup was being opened for Callahan. … The Kings should have the entire roster available against the Rangers.
