Caps try to even series against Rangers

RANGERS AT CAPITALS

(New York leads best-of-seven series, 2-1)

TV: NBC, CBC, RDS

Big Story:
After an epic, three-overtime battle that ended with a goal by Marian Gaborik giving the Rangers a 2-1 win and 2-1 series lead, both teams will have to rev it back up again for this afternoon affair on NBC.

Team Scope:

Rangers:
What? The Rangers tired after playing nearly two full games Wednesday night? Not according to coach John Tortorella.

"I think all of us have been involved in those situations," Tortorella said. "Again, I'm happy the team found a way. I'm happy the way they handled themselves. I'm not surprised the way they handled themselves. They'll probably have to do it again, and they'll probably have to do it again in this series. It's a win for us. I just don't want us to get too carried away because this is part of it. This is what you have to do. I don't think it's anything special. It's a good lesson for us early."

The Rangers will likely go with the same lineup, as center Brandon Dubinsky still needs crutches to get around.

Capitals: Just like the Rangers, the Capitals also needed to recharge their batteries during the two days off after Game 3. Center Brooks Laich fell into such a deep sleep that when he awoke, he thought his season was over.

"I woke up and for some reason I thought the season was over. I had a deep sleep, a long, deep sleep," Laich told reporters after Friday's practice at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va. "I woke up and thought the season was over. And it refreshed in my mind: we only lost one hockey game and it's 2-1 [in the series]. We're still in a good position."

The Caps shuffled their lines at practice a bit Friday, but they will also likely ice the same lineup in Game 4.

Who's Hot: The Rangers' Derek Stepan has a goal and five assists in his last four games.

Injury Report: Brandon Dubinsky of the Rangers is dealing with a lower-body injury and will not play.

Stat Pack: By winning in triple overtime Wednesday night (actually Thursday morning), the Rangers avoided losing for the eighth straight time in postseason overtime, which would have matched the NHL record for consecutive OT losses in the playoffs. Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist was the loser in all seven of those games.

Puck Drop: "It's the little things. I remember when he came into the League, I was playing against him on the fourth line. He's a guy who paid his dues and worked hard to get where he's at. When you have a guy that's done those things and gone through the process of bettering himself as a player, he doesn't forget where it all came from -- his work ethic. He brings it every day." -- Rangers forward Mike Rupp, on captain Ryan Callahan
