Season series -- This contest marks the first of four meetings between the teams. They split the regular-season series in 2009-10, with the Bruins scoring a 2-1 overtime victory at the 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Fenway Park, and then notched a 5-1 victory in Philadelphia on March 11.
Big story -- It's the first meeting between the Eastern Conference rivals since last spring's improbable postseason comeback by the Flyers. Not only did the Flyers become the first team in 35 years to win a best-of-7 series after losing the first three games, but they also rallied from a 3-0 first-period deficit to win the decisive Game 7 in Boston. Not since 1991 had a team surrendered a three-goal lead and lost in a Game 7, when the Calgary Flames suffered a 5-4 overtime defeat against the Edmonton Oilers. The New York Islanders were the last team to rally from an 0-3 deficit to win a series, in 1975 against the Pittsburgh Penguins; the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs were the only other team to do so.
Bruins -- Goalie Tuukka Rask failed to get much goal support Sunday -- once again -- and fell to 1-6-1 on the season following a 4-1 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers. The Bruins have scored 12 goals in Rask's seven starts and eight goals in his six losses as a starter. For the season, Rask sports a 2.59 goals-against average and .926 save percentage. He finished 22-12-5 last season with a 1.97 GAA and .931 save percentage. The Bruins have lost four of their last five games, scoring five goals in those four losses.
Flyers -- Philadelphia returns to action after completing a stretch of 10 games in 17 days Saturday with a 2-1 shootout loss to the New Jersey Devils. Philadelphia finished 6-2-2 and earned 14 of a possible 20 points. The club went the final five games of that stretch without a regulation loss (3-0-2) but dropped back-to-back shootouts to Calgary and the Devils, when they were outscored 3-0 in the first period.
Who's hot -- Flyers captain Mike Richards has 9 goals and 22 points in his last 19 games. … Boston goalie Tim Thomas is 11-2-1 with a 1.56 GAA and .951 save percentage this season.
Injury report -- Bruins center Marc Savard (post-concussion syndrome) has begun practicing with the team but is probably 1-2 weeks away from playing in a game. The Bruins remain without Marco Sturm (knee surgery). … Flyers forward Daniel Carcillo (sprained left MCL) has resumed skating but remains sidelined another three weeks. Goalie Michael Leighton (back surgery) has been sent to AHL Adirondack for a conditioning assignment.
Stat pack -- Flyers center Danny Briere snapped the team's three-game scoring drought on the power-play when he connected with the man-advantage in the third period Saturday against the Devils. The Philadelphia power play is 2-for-33 in its last seven games and 2-for-41 in the 10 games the Flyers have not won (0-6-4).
Puck drop -- "I think right now, our team is not playing to win. We seem to be playing to lose," Bruins coach Claude Julien said after Sunday's loss to Atlanta.
