Pronger, Emery debut against Hurricanes

FLYERS (0-0-0) at HURRICANES (0-0-0)
-- This is the first game of the season for both teams. The Flyers won three of the four meetings last season -- one in regulation, one in overtime, and the other in a shootout. The Hurricanes' lone win came in overtime.
-- It's the regular-season debuts for the Flyers' Chris Pronger
and Ray Emery. Pronger was acquired in a trade on Draft Night to shut down the East's big guns, and Carolina's Eric Staal
will be his first test. Emery will play his first NHL game after spending all of last season in Russia.
-- There may not be a more talented team in the League right now. Danny Briere
is healthy, giving a team that scored the fourth-most goals in the League last season even more offensive depth.
-- After an up-and-down regular season that saw them finish sixth in the East, Carolina made it all the way to the conference finals, winning Game 7s in New Jersey and Boston. Goalie Cam Ward
, who signed a six-year extension this week, will try to help the team build on last season.
-- It's hard to find players who are sizzling come out of preseason, but Flyers goalie Ray Emery allowed just 8 goals in 6 appearances for a 1.78 GAA. Carolina's Eric Staal
is entering the regular season on the right foot, picking up a goal and assist in his team’s 5-2 win at Nashville.
-- Carolina defenseman Joni Pitkanen
, who had knee surgery in the offseason, skated Tuesday and is expected to be in the lineup for the opener. The Flyers lack any noteworthy injuries.
-- Jeff Carter had 6 points (2-4) in four games against Carolina last season. Ward split his two starts against the Flyers last season, but posted an impressive 1.96 GAA and .923 save percentage.
-- The Hurricanes haven’t beaten the Flyers in regulation since Dec. 19, 2006, a span of 11 games.
