Islanders-Thrashers Preview
New York Islanders vs. Atlanta Thrashers

The New York Islanders aren't playing well against many teams these days. They've been particularly bad against the Atlanta Thrashers.

The Thrashers look to sweep their season series with the Islanders for the first time in club history Thursday night at Philips Arena.

This game is a matchup of two of the NHL's worst teams. Atlanta (17-27-5) has 39 points, putting it in a tie with Ottawa for the second-fewest in the league.

New York (13-29-5), meanwhile, is enduring its worst season since going 21-51-7 in 2000-01. The Islanders have 31 points, and had lost eight straight before beating Anaheim 2-1 on Jan. 21 before the All-Star break.

Atlanta has taken advantage of its three games against the Islanders, outscoring them 13-6. The Thrashers were 12-17-1 with two ties versus New York before this season.

These teams last met Dec. 23, when Atlanta won 4-2. The Thrashers have scored at least four goals in each matchup with the Islanders this season.

Atlanta, though, couldn't give Kari Lehtonen any help offensively in a 2-0 loss to Dallas on Tuesday night.

The Thrashers were shut out for the fourth time this season and have dropped two straight since winning three in a row. They wasted a 31-save effort from Lehtonen.

"You can't just have one guy going," Atlanta coach John Anderson said. "We're not so blessed with talent that we can have five or six guys take nights off."

Lehtonen, who has a career-worst 3.14 goals-against average in 24 games, hasn't faced the Islanders this season. Johan Hedberg started two of the games versus New York, posting a 1.50 GAA.

The Islanders are without their top two goalies. Last week, they shut down starter Rick DiPietro (knee) for the season, and Joey MacDonald is out for at least one more week with a strained groin.

Yann Danis has played well in goal the last five games, posting a 2.05 GAA, and he finally got a win in his last contest. Danis made 39 saves versus the Ducks after going 0-5-1 in his previous seven games.

All-Star defenseman Mark Streit, who leads the Islanders with 35 points (eight goals, 27 assists), has an assist in each of his last two games. Streit, the first Swiss-born player to be selected for the All-Star game, had two assists as the Eastern Conference defeated the West 12-11 in a shootout Sunday.

"Being recognized as a defenseman means a lot to me," said Streit, who had a career-high 62 points (13 goals, 49 assists) as a part-time forward with Montreal last season.

Streit has five assists in his last four games against Atlanta.

Islanders center Mike Sillinger, a two-time All-Star, has undergone hip surgery for the second time in a year and will miss the remainder of the season. His hadn't played since Dec. 29, and finished with two goals in seven games.
