Stars-Coyotes Preview
Dallas Stars vs. Phoenix Coyotes

GAME: Dallas Stars (50-21-5) at Phoenix Coyotes (36-36-4).

TIME: Saturday, 10 p.m. EDT.

After clinching the Pacific Division title in their last outing, the Dallas Stars now look to match the franchise record for wins in a season when they visit the Phoenix Coyotes.

The Stars snapped a season high-tying three-game losing streak and clinched their seventh division crown in the last nine years with a 5-3 victory over second-place Anaheim on Thursday.

"It's something our players can be proud of," coach Dave Tippett said. "What it does is guarantee you're in the playoffs and gives you home ice for the first round. Anytime you win a division title, those are the perks that go with it, and it's a feather in your cap."

Thursday's victory was Dallas' 50th, one shy of the franchise record set in 1998-99 when it won its only Stanley Cup. The Stars, though, lost captain Mike Modano with a left knee injury in the second period.

"When any player goes down you get a little scare, but it's not bad at all. He just tweaked an old injury," Tippett said. "We're obviously glad that it's nothing too serious with Mike, but we'll just see how he is Saturday. That's a decision we'll make at game time."

Modano, a six-time All-Star that tops the franchise in every major offensive category, has missed only 29 games over the last seven seasons.

While Modano may rest against the Coyotes, Tippett expects to have right wing Bill Guerin back in the lineup. Guerin has missed the last 11 games with a fractured orbital bone in his right eye after taking a high stick on March 13 against Vancouver. The 14-year veteran has 12 goals and 24 assists this season.

Phoenix lost 5-2 to Northwest Division-leading Calgary on Wednesday and has been outscored 12-3 in dropping its last two contests following a stretch of six wins in seven games.

"We anticipated a lot better out of ourselves over these two games ... because we really had been playing really well as a team," coach Wayne Gretzky said.

Shane Doan and Geoff Sanderson scored power-play goals against the Flames, and Philippe Sauve made 32 saves in just his second start since being acquired from Calgary at the trade deadline.

"He's come in and he's been good in our room," Gretzky said. "He works hard everyday. He hasn't complained about not playing. He just shows up everyday and works hard."

Phoenix starting goalie Curtis Joseph is 6-15-3 with a 3.51 goals-against average against Dallas since the 1995-96 season.
