The Islanders are 8-2-2 at home against the Penguins since the start of the 2000-01 season.
Alexei Yashin notched his 25th goal of the season against the New York Rangers on Wednesday, but it was league-leading scorer Jaromir Jagr who grabbed the spotlight. Jagr registered four assists in the Rangers' 5-1 victory, breaking the Rangers' franchise record for points in a season with his 110th.
"He's a special hockey player," Islanders interim coach Brad Shaw said. "Early in his career, he looked like this. I don't know what happened in a few of his middle years, but certainly this year, he's found the love of the game again."
Meanwhile, a struggling Islanders offense managed just 19 shots on goal and nearly was shut out for the second straight game. New York lost 2-0 to Montreal on Tuesday.
The Isles are 2-5-1 in their last eight games.
The Penguins have lost four of their last five contests, including a 5-3 defeat against Florida on Wednesday.
John LeClair scored his 400th career goal and Sergei Gonchar had two assists, but goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury allowed four goals on 17 shots before getting pulled midway through the second period.
Backup Sebastien Caron stopped all eight shots he faced.
LeClair's 18th goal of the season came on the power play, when he flipped a backhanded shot past Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo.
"I've scored quite a few goals like that," LeClair said. "It's one less thing hanging over your head. Now you can just go out and play hard. I'm glad it's behind us. It's nice to be able to have family here for it."
Penguins leading scorer Sidney Crosby was held without a point for just the 20th time in 71 games this season. His 80 points rank second among rookies behind Washington's Alexander Ovechkin.
