The Blue Jackets beat the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 in overtime on Friday in Gallant's first game at home since becoming interim coach on Jan. 1.
"Not much was said about Gerrard's first game here, but the guys didn't want to have a letdown," said Geoff Sanderson, who scored the Blue Jackets' first goal.
Rick Nash, who leads the NHL with 27 goals, scored twice, including the game-winner, for Columbus, which is 3-3-2-0 under Gallant. Nash has four goals and an assist in his last five games.
"It was great," Gallant said. "We played two solid periods and then again in the third period we laid back a bit. Fortunately, we got into overtime and had a big goal by Nash."
The Blue Jackets, who play six of their next seven games at home, snapped an eight-game home winless streak (0-6-1-1).
"We've been waiting a while," said Nash.
The Oilers are coming Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Nashville Predators -- just their second defeat in five games. Ryan Smith scored with just nine seconds left to help Edmonton avoid the shutout.
"We gave the puck away too much, and it added to the pressure we were putting on ourselves," coach Craig MacTavish said.
