The Canadiens lost 2-1 in overtime at Carolina on Saturday, dropping their second straight and third in five games overall.
Richard Zednik scored a power-play goal at 5:58 of the third period to force overtime, but Sean Hill scored a goal off a faceoff three seconds into a Carolina man-advantage to give the Hurricanes the win.
"I didn't see it. I got screened off," Montreal goalie Jose Theodore said. "I went down to protect the bottom half of the net, and he went upstairs."
Montreal, which has not scored more than two goals during its road losing streak, was playing its first game since Tuesday and was coming off a two-day Christmas break.
"You would hope your team comes back with a little more jump, but we seemed rusty," Montreal coach Claude Julien said.
The Thrashers are coming off Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators, snapping a three-game winning streak.
Atlanta activated defenseman Ivan Majesky, who had missed five games with an aggravated left knee injury, on Saturday. The Thrashers placed forward Serge Aubin, who strained his neck and suffered a mild concussion on Dec. 12, on injured reserve.
Majesky has two goals and two assists in 26 games this season, and Aubin has six goals and 10 assists in 35 games.
