Ducks edge Oilers on Getzlaf's goal in third period

Derek Van Diest  - NHL.com Correspondent | Sunday, 02.22.2015 / 12:34 AM

EDMONTON -- The Anaheim Ducks continue to excel in close games.

Ryan Getzlaf got some help when he scored with 7:14 left in the third period to lift the Ducks to a 2-1 victory against the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place on Saturday. Oilers defenseman Justin Schultz inadvertently kicked the puck into the net after Getzlaf poked it from under goaltender Ben Scrivens.

"Any points right now are big," Getzlaf said. "Nobody is going to roll over and give you anything down the stretch; you have to earn it. I thought we did a lot of good things tonight. We had a few breakdowns, but mostly we kept everything to the outside, and our goaltender played good.

"We've been trying to get to the net more aggressively. When you are having trouble scoring goals, that's what you need to do. We got a lucky bounce there at the end."

The Ducks are 25-0-7 in one-goal games this season.

Anaheim (37-16-7) has won two in a row after rallying for a 6-3 win against the Calgary Flames on Friday.

"The second night in back-to-back games for both teams, it is just a mental battle," Ducks defenseman Ben Lovejoy said. "Your legs just don't have quite the same jump and you have to be mentally sharp, and I think we were tonight. I really credit our forwards for the way we have been able to turn things around of late. They have gone to work grinding. They are impossible to stop when they want to keep the puck down low."

Francois Beauchemin also scored for Anaheim. Goaltender John Gibson, in his fifth consecutive start, made 26 saves for the Ducks.

Teddy Purcell scored for Edmonton. Scrivens, in his third straight start, made 19 saves for the Oilers (17-34-10), who have lost two straight.

Edmonton was limited to 15 shots in a 4-0 loss against the Minnesota Wild on Friday.

"It was important to bounce back just for our confidence," Purcell said. "We can't live with games like that, whatever it was, whether we were tired or not ready, there is no excuse, so it was good to come back and show that effort today."

Beauchemin scored a power-play goal 45 seconds into the first period on the first shot of the game to give Anaheim the early lead. The Ducks defenseman took a pass at the blue line off a face-off and put a snap shot past Scrivens for his sixth goal.

"After the first five or six minutes, I thought it was going to be a long night," Oilers coach Todd Nelson said. "We didn't manage the puck that well. We didn't settle in until about six or seven minutes into the period. But once we settled in, I thought we played a strong game.

"The rest of the way we had some great effort tonight; it was a good bounce-back game for our hockey team. It was one of those things where we had some opportunities that we didn't bury, and they were able to get one in the third period."

Purcell tied the game 1-1 with his eight goal 28 seconds into the second period. The Oilers left wing took a cross-crease pass from Nail Yakupov and snapped a shot past Gibson.

Derek Roy started the play, winning a battle along the boards and spotting Yakupov unattended at the side of the net. It was Purcell's second goal in his past three games.

"It was a good play by Roy to pick it up off the wall and create a 2-on-1 for me and Yakupov," Purcell said. "He didn't have much room to get it over to me, but if he was able to, I had an empty net, so it was a good play by him. I had the whole net to shoot at."

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins came close to giving Edmonton the lead midway through the first period, but his rising shot from the slot hit the crossbar.

Hampus Lindholm had an excellent opportunity to give Anaheim the lead seven minutes into the third period. The Ducks defenseman jumped on a loose puck in the slot, but his shot was gloved by Scrivens.

"We battled. I think it was an effort to be proud of," Oilers right wing Jordan Eberle said. "The win and the two points is what we wanted, but they got a bounce at the end to seal it. But I think the effort level and the compete level was there."

Getzlaf scored the winner after Scrivens was unable to smother a shot from Kyle Palmieri, allowing the puck to drop under his pad. Getzlaf was first to the puck, poking it toward the net. Schultz knocked it in and Getzlaf was credited with his 19th goal.

"It felt like it was underneath me and kind of got jammed away, but those are the breaks," Scrivens said. "We had a bad start again, they really took it to us in the first five or seven minutes, but we responded well. Big goal by Teddy to start the second, and it was back and forth the rest of the way. It's unfortunate we didn't get the result but the effort was there."

Palmieri had two assists to extend his point streak to three games.

The Ducks will host the Detroit Red Wings on Monday in the first of a three-game homestand. Edmonton visits the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday.
