Canadiens complete season-series sweep of Bruins

Matt Kalman  - NHL.com Correspondent | Sunday, 02.08.2015 / 11:52 PM

BOSTON -- Montreal Canadiens forwards Max Pacioretty, David Desharnais and Dale Weise continued their hot play on Sunday, and the result was a win and a season-series sweep of the Canadiens' fiercest rival, the Boston Bruins.

Pacioretty and Weise had one goal and one assist each and goaltender Carey Price made 34 saves in the Canadiens' 3-1 victory at TD Garden.

Pacioretty, Weise and Desharnais combined for seven points in a 6-2 win against the New Jersey Devils on Saturday. Desharnais had an assist against the Bruins.

"I don't have the answer. You know our line has a lot of chemistry, me, David, [Pacioretty], we love playing together," Weise said. "Early in the year we just had a couple shifts together and we seem to have some instant chemistry and we're getting a chance to play together for full games and we are really getting comfortable with each other. We just feel dangerous every time we go out there we try to score."

Montreal (34-15-3) hadn't swept the season series from the Bruins since 2007-08 when it went 7-0.

"We understand that it was a huge challenge for us tonight," Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said. "The Bruins are playing really solid hockey lately, and both teams played [Saturday] night. We find ways to win. I thought we were really solid, and we were pursuing the puck well, and we put pucks at the net. We didn't try to be fancy, and that's our game."

Price is now tied for fourth on the Canadiens' all-time list with Bill Durnan with 208 wins.

"You know what? It wasn’t even really on my radar until [executive director of media relations Dominick Saillant] came and showed me," Price said. "But definitely cool."

Boston (28-18-8) received 31 saves from Tuukka Rask and a goal from forward David Pastrnak.

"I think we lost too many battles, and again you can't beat a team like that if you're not going to win your battles, which is what we should be good at," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "When we did kind of pushed our game on them in spurts we were getting some success but, you know, if you can't sustain it throughout the whole game then you're not going to get the results and we got them in spurts tonight. I don't think we made Carey Price's night real hard. He didn't have to move much. He just stood there, stopped the shots, so those are areas that weren't good enough. And in order to beat this team that really gets up for us our best players have to be our best players and we didn't have that tonight."

The Canadiens had two power plays in the first period but the Bruins killed both, which ran their success rate to 31 of 33 over the past nine games. Montreal outshot Boston 11-7 during the scoreless first period.

Weise gave the Canadiens a 1-0 lead 38 seconds into the second period. Weise snuck to the Bruins net through the backdoor, where he slid in a rebound of a Pacioretty one-timer off the right post. Weise had gained the zone and passed the puck off Desharnais to Pacioretty at the left wall.

Price and Rask kept the score right there, with Montreal outshooting the Bruins 14-13 in the second period.

Pacioretty extended the lead to 2-0 56 seconds into the third period. Bruins defensemen Zdeno Chara and Dougie Hamilton collided near the high slot in the Montreal end and the puck was deflected to Weise, who sprung Pacioretty for a breakaway. Pacioretty beat Rask with a wrist shot just after he passed the hash marks.

The Bruins captain took the blame for the miscue.

"No, that's my bad," Chara said. "You know I saw [Bruins center] David [Krejci] going around the net and I moved in. That's something that I shouldn't probably. Usually you have that cross-seam defenseman moving in. You know I misread and it ended up costing us. I'm taking the blame for that because that's something I should be more patient."

Pastrnak ended Price's shutout bid with a goal at 15:29 of the third period. Pastrnak hacked at a rebound and the puck eluded Price's glove swipe before crossing the goal line. The call on the ice was no goal, but the NHL Situation Room overturned the call and Montreal's lead was trimmed to 2-1. The Bruins had gone 159:25 without a goal against Montreal.

Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov's empty-net goal sealed the win with 30.5 seconds left.
