Boyle scores twice to lead Lightning past Ducks

Corey Long  - NHL.com Correspondent | Sunday, 02.08.2015 / 9:21 PM

TAMPA -- Brian Boyle scored two goals to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 5-3 win against the Anaheim Ducks at Amalie Arena on Sunday.

Valtteri Filppula, Nikita Kucherov and Ryan Callahan also scored for the Lightning (34-16-5), who took a two-point lead on the idle Detroit Red Wings for first place in the Eastern Conference.

Anaheim (34-13-7) center Ryan Getzlaf returned to the ice after missing the past two games and scored his 200th career goal. The Ducks, however, now trail the Nashville Predators by a point for the top spot in the Western Conference.

Sami Vatanen and Eric Brewer also scored goals for the Ducks.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first period against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday, the Lightning flipped the script and led the Ducks 3-0 after the first period Sunday.

"We weren’t happy with [Saturday] and against a good team [Sunday] we played a good game," Lightning goalie Ben Bishop said. "It was a good start after what happened Saturday."

Bishop, who was pulled in the first period Saturday, got the start over scheduled starter Andrei Vasilevskiy and made 25 saves.

"I was really happy [Lightning coach Jon Cooper] went back with me," Bishop said. "Anytime you get pulled like that you want to bounce back, and against the best team in the West, there is not a better team to do it against."

Boyle's first goal came at 2:55 of the first period after defenseman Victor Hedman split two defenders and found Boyle open in the slot for a wrist shot at close range past Anaheim goalie Frederik Andersen to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead.

"It was important to get these points because we don't have a lot of home games coming up," Boyle said. "I just think we came to the rink focused and we knew we needed to come out strong and make some positive plays."

Filppula made it 2-0 with his 11th goal at 13:42. With the teams at even strength, Callahan backhanded a pass from the left wing towards the net where Steven Stamkos redirected it to the slot. Filppula quickly put a wrist shot past Andersen.

Kucherov made it 3-0 at 18:52 of the period after winger Tyler Johnson made a pinpoint pass to catch the tip of Kucherov's stick and he beat Anaheim defenseman Cam Fowler to the goal and scored on the chip-in. Fowler slammed his stick against the boards in frustration after the play.

"We came out really focused on offense and defense," Filppula said. "Getting out to a 3-0 lead against a good team like that really says a lot about this team and the way we can come back from a bad game."

Getzlaf trimmed the deficit to 3-1 with his milestone goal at 4:49 of the second period. The goal was originally disallowed with the linesman ruling that the puck deflected off Getzlaf's skate. But the call was overturned after the video review determined that Corey Perry's pass deflected off of Getzlaf's skate and then off of Boyle's skate before going past Bishop.

"We were playing catch up the whole game," Ducks center Nate Thompson said. "We did some good things at the end of the game and never quit, but they came out hard and we couldn't match them. We just have to forget about this one and move on. We have two more games left on this road trip."

Boyle scored his second goal of the game at 14:27 of the second. Brett Connolly had the initial chance when he carried the puck out from behind the net and tried to whack it past Andersen, and Boyle followed the play and poked a loose puck over the goal line to make it 4-1.

The Lightning extended their lead to 5-1 at 6:14 of third period on Callahan's 16th goal of the season when he scored on a put back of a wrist shot by Stamkos.

"Obviously we had our eyes on the game last night," Ducks center Kyle Palmieri said. "We saw that [Los Angeles] got a 3-0 lead and we saw these guys battle back. We knew what we needed to do in the first period and we just didn't do it."

Andersen was removed from the game 10:02 into the third period when the goal apparatus fell on top of him. He was replaced by Ilya Bryzgalov.

"I talked with [Andersen] and it doesn't appear to be anything too serious," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. "It was a bit of a scare."
