Williams, Quick power Kings past Lightning

Corey Long  - NHL.com Correspondent | Saturday, 02.07.2015 / 9:23 PM

TAMPA -- The Los Angeles Kings took a three-goal lead in the first period of a 4-2 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena on Saturday.

Justin Williams scored two goals, Tyler Toffoli and Drew Doughty scored one each, and the Kings (22-18-12) won for the first time on a five-game road trip (1-3-0).

"A win is important no matter where you get it," said Kings goalie Jonathan Quick, who made 26 saves. "Two points is what we needed. We scored four goals and that should be enough most nights."

Nikita Kucherov and Victor Hedman scored for the Lightning (33-16-5), who failed to win an 11th consecutive home game.

"We didn't start the game well being down 3-0," Lightning center Steven Stamkos said. "We're not going to win too many games in this league starting behind like that. We never quit, but the fourth goal was kind of a backbreaker. We didn't seem to respond well after that."

Los Angeles took a 1-0 lead at 1:33 of the first period when Toffoli got control of a puck the Lightning misplayed in their zone, leaving him to score on a breakaway against goalie Ben Bishop.

Williams' first goal came at 12:30 of the first when center Trevor Lewis made a cross-ice pass that found Williams' stick in front of the goal for the chip past Bishop and a 2-0 lead.

"It's funny, I didn't think I played all that well but somehow ended up with a couple of goals," Williams said. "Some nights you play really well and have nothing to show for it. But that first goal doesn't happen without Trevor making a terrific play. I just happened to be the guy lucky enough to be on the other end of it. This was a big win for us on this road trip and hopefully we can go to Columbus (for a game Monday) and close things out."

The third goal came with 1.5 seconds remaining in the period when Doughty took a wrist shot from the left circle that bounced off the jersey of Lightning forward Ondrej Palat and over Bishop's stick.

"I was just trying to put the puck on the net before the end of the period, so I took a little bit of a risk with the shot," Doughty said. "Sometimes those things work out for the best. I thought the guys played well. When we execute the game plan and the players elevate their game, we're a very good team and we've got to realize that."

The Lightning pulled Bishop to start the second period with backup Andrei Vasilevskiy. Bishop made six saves on nine shots, and Vasilevskiy stopped 19 of 20.

"Yeah, it's one of those games … I would like to have made one of those saves, keep the team in it, didn't happen tonight," Bishop said. "But, you know, it's a long season, so I'm not going to lose sleep over it. Just turn the page and get ready for tomorrow."

Hedman made it 3-2 at 1:34 of the third period after he took a pass from Ryan Callahan in the right circle and shot the puck past Quick high on the stick side with Williams hanging on his jersey.

"I really thought we were in a good position to complete the comeback," Hedman said. "We got down 3-0 in the first period, and that's tough to recover from, but this team is going to battle every night. When we got the one in the second and the one early in the third it looked real promising."

Williams scored at 7:46 of the third period on a counterattack when his wrist shot from the right circle went past Vasilevskiy on the glove side.

"That fourth goal was huge because we've let down our guard and given up some leads this season," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. "It's been frustrating to have the lead and lost them, but tonight we fought through it and got a win against a very good team on their home ice."

Tampa Bay assistant Rick Bowness participated in his 2,000th game as an NHL coach.

The Lightning play the second half of their back-to-back when they host the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday. The Kings finish their road trip against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday.
