Shaw, Blackhawks defeat Coyotes; Kane scores 200th

Brian Hedger  - NHL.com Correspondent | Wednesday, 01.21.2015 / 12:51 AM

CHICAGO -- Andrew Shaw hadn't been playing the gritty game that got him to the NHL.

It was only one game, but Shaw and the Chicago Blackhawks broke out of their recent slumps in a 6-1 victory against the struggling Arizona Coyotes at United Center on Tuesday.

Shaw scored two goals, Patrick Kane scored the 200th goal of his career, and the Blackhawks ended a two-game losing streak in Joel Quenneville's 500th game as Chicago coach.

Shaw, who was benched for poor play in a 6-3 loss to the Dallas Stars on Sunday, had one goal in his previous 22 games.

"It's all I've been thinking about," he said. "[I was] just going out there and doing the little things -- working, winning 1-on-1 puck battles, taking pucks to the net -- and hopefully I found my game again tonight."

The Blackhawks (29-15-2) will play their next seven games on the road, starting with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday. The next time they play in Chicago, it will again be the Coyotes (16-25-5) on the other side of the ice.

Chicago rookie forward Teuvo Teravainen scored a goal and had an assist on Shaw's first goal for his first career multipoint game, Jonathan Toews scored his first goal since Dec. 21 (11 games), and defenseman David Rundblad scored his second goal of the season to complete the scoring in the third.

Forwards Bryan Bickell, Patrick Sharp and Brad Richards each had two assists, and goalie Antti Raanta made 35 saves for the win.

"I guess the approach was much more businesslike today in the skate and in the game, and in the preparation going into the game," Quenneville said. "We got off to a strong start. Scoring first certainly helps, nice shot on the power play (by Toews). We did a lot of good things."

The Blackhawks, who went 1-for-5 on the power play, outshot the Coyotes 51-36.

Arizona has lost its past six games (0-5-1) and is 2-7-1 in its past 10. Goalie Mike Smith made 45 saves.

"We talk about it all the time, about staying out of the box," Smith said. "Obviously, our penalty kill hasn't been where it needs to be. I think, you put yourself in penalty trouble against a team with high skill, you're going to get burned. It was just another instance of it tonight. But right from the drop of the puck, we were … just got outcompeted, outworked in a lot of different areas."

The Blackhawks took a 2-0 lead into the second on goals by Toews and Shaw.

Toews scored his 14th goal to make it 1-0 at 6:53 to cap a power play after Arizona forward Lucas Lessio was called for tripping. Crisp passes in the offensive zone by Sharp and Kane got the puck to Toews in the slot, and Toews did the rest with a hard wrist shot to beat Smith.

Shaw made it 2-0 at 12:48 with his seventh goal. It was his first goal and second point since Dec. 29 against the Nashville Predators.

Bickell won a puck battle behind the Coyotes net, and Shaw went straight to the front of the crease, received a pass from Teravainen on the right wing, wheeled and shot the puck past Smith.

"[Teravainen's pass] was unbelievable," Shaw said. "He told me to go to the net and he'd get it to me. He's a smart player. He's got a lot of hockey sense and he's got the skill to go with it."

Chicago scored three more times in the second to make it 5-1 after 40 minutes, and Rundblad scored late in the third.

Kane scored his milestone goal at 3:51, Teravainen scored his second goal of the season at 9:42 and Shaw scored his second of the game at 19:19. Kane scored off a rebound of a shot by Richards. Teravainen put in his own rebound after a shot from the slot. Shaw scored with a wrist shot from the slot.

Sharp, who picked up a secondary assist on Kane's goal, chased down the puck after it came out of the net and slid down the side boards.

"It was funny, I was talking to [Sharp] the shift before and I was telling him he assisted on my first goal, he assisted on my 100th goal and we'll see if you assist on my 200th goal," Kane said. "He gave it to me in the defensive zone, and we ended up scoring a goal. We were just kind of laughing about it after, because we'd just talked about it the shift before. Good little story to remember."

Lessio scored his first NHL goal with 2:06 left in the second period to cut Chicago's lead to 4-1. It was his 12th career game.
