Beleskey, Andersen give Ducks win at Canadiens

Sean Farrell  - NHL.com Correspondent | Friday, 12.19.2014 / 12:52 AM

MONTREAL -- The Anaheim Ducks bounced back and won a game between Saku Koivu's two former NHL teams.

Matt Beleskey scored 8:33 into the third period to give Anaheim a 2-1 win against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Thursday.

Beleskey took a pass from Rickard Rakell and beat Canadiens goalie Carey Price with a quick wrist shot to restore the Ducks' one-goal lead 3:06 after Montreal had tied it.

"[Rakell] made a great play. He outbattled a guy on the wall and made a nice pass to me, and luckily I put it past him," said Beleskey, who leads the Ducks with 15 goals. "It's nice to get timely goals like that, for sure. We needed this game after last game, and I'm really happy with the way our team played."

Frederik Andersen made 23 saves in his 20th straight start, and Hampus Lindholm scored in the first period for Anaheim.

The Ducks have won eight of their past nine games; they had a seven-game winning streak snapped in a 6-2 loss at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.

Anaheim (22-7-5), which leads the NHL with 49 points, finishes its five-game Canada road trip Friday at the Ottawa Senators.

David Desharnais drew Montreal even at 1-1 with a power-play goal at 5:27 of the third period.

Price made 21 saves for the Canadiens (20-11-2), who won the first three games of a five-game homestand that ends against the Senators on Saturday.

"We worked hard tonight," Montreal coach Michel Therrien said. "I liked our work ethic, I liked our passion, we were on the puck; we had good scoring chances and we didn't capitalize on it."

The Canadiens honored Koivu, their longtime captain, during a pregame ceremony. Koivu spent his first 13 NHL seasons with Montreal from 1995-2009. He retired Sept. 10 after five seasons with Anaheim.

"I always remember my first training camp here; when I got sent back, he told me to keep my head up and it meant the world to me," Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban said. "It's just the type of guy that he is. He puts everybody else ahead of himself and that's why he was the captain of this team for nine years and that's why people love him here."

Anaheim captain Ryan Getzlaf, Koivu's teammate for the past five seasons, got his team-leading 25th assist and 35th point when he set up Lindholm's fourth goal at 8:16 of the first.

Getzlaf controlled the puck after winning a faceoff against Manny Malhotra in Montreal's zone. He passed to the left point, where Lindholm one-timed a slap shot past Price into the top left corner.

"It was kind of a broken play," Getzlaf said. "The puck stayed there for a second, and my wingers did a great job of going to the net, and that was part of our game plan, obviously, when those guys were on the ice. [Lindholm] had a great shot, and I don't think Carey saw it all the way in."

Canadiens left wing Max Pacioretty left the game at 4:04 of the third. Pacioretty, who leads Montreal with 13 goals and 25 points, went to the dressing room after he fell headfirst into the boards following a hit by Anaheim defenseman Clayton Stoner.

"I think their team wasn't happy about it," Stoner said. "I didn't mean to hurt him, but the game's fast and sometimes guys go into the boards wrong, so I hope he's all right and I didn't mean any intentions to hurt him."

Pacioretty did not return. No penalty was called.

"It's an upper-body injury, and we sent him to the hospital for precaution," Therrien said.

Ducks forward Patrick Maroon was penalized for interference at 4:40, and Montreal tied the game on the power play. Desharnais scored his fourth goal when he one-timed a slap shot past Andersen from the right side to finish a passing play with Andrei Markov and Alex Galchenyuk.
