Lightning edge Red Wings for sixth straight win

Paul Harris  - NHL.com Correspondent | Sunday, 11.09.2014 / 10:13 PM

DETROIT -- The Tampa Bay Lightning lost a two-goal lead but kept their winning streak intact.

Ryan Callahan scored the only goal of the shootout to give Tampa Bay its sixth consecutive victory, 4-3 against the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena on Sunday.

Detroit rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the second period to send the game past regulation and earn a point, but Callahan beat Jimmy Howard with a wrist shot in the first round of the tiebreaker and Tampa Bay goaltender Ben Bishop stopped all three Detroit shooters.

"A good start [to the season]. Nothing we can hang our hats on. We've got a tough schedule coming up," Bishop said after the Lightning improved to 11-3-1.

Despite seeing a two-goal lead disappear, Lightning coach Jon Cooper was happy with his team's performance as well as the result.

"That was as close to a 60-minute game as we've played," Cooper said. "We got the lead … Unfortunately, we couldn't protect the lead well enough. I think we dictated the play most of the game. Give Detroit credit. We bent but we didn't break."

Steven Stamkos scored twice and Tyler Johnson had the other goal in regulation for Tampa Bay. Callahan had two assists and Bishop stopped 17 shots through 65 minutes.

"We played a solid game and found a way to win," Stamkos said.

Johan Franzen and Gustav Nyquist each had a goal and an assist, and Darren Helm scored for Detroit (7-3-5). Defenseman Niklas Kronwall had two assists and Howard made 27 saves in regulation and overtime.

"We battled and got ourselves a point. We had chances, especially in overtime," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "Bishop played real well in overtime. We would've liked to get the second point but we didn't."

The Red Wings are 0-3 in shootouts this season.

"We haven't been good enough. We can't seem to find a way to score, then we don't win shootouts. It's tough," Nyquist said. "We want to get that extra point when it comes down to it but we haven't been able to do it this year."

"I thought we had a couple chances, especially in overtime. We got a point at least."

Nyquist tied it 3-3 at 8:49 of the third period. He fired a wrist shot from the top of the left circle past Bishop after stickhandling his way across the ice and past and around Lightning players from the red line for his eighth goal.

Bishop stopped Henrik Zetterberg with a glove save from the bottom of the right circle 40 seconds into the third period and denied Kronwall from the slot with 1:27 left in overtime.

"I knew there was going to be a pass [to Kronwall], so I got over there pretty quick and he went high," Bishop said.

Helm pulled the Red Wings within 3-2 with 8:23 left in the second period by beating Bishop with a slap shot from the top of the left circle off the rush. It was Helm's first goal of the season.

Stamkos and Johnson scored 3:43 apart early in the second period to give the Lightning a 3-1 lead.

Stamkos snapped a 1-1 tie at 2:19 with his second goal of the game when he fired a wrist shot past Howard from the high slot. But play continued and it went to video review at the next stoppage of play, which was at 3:09. Replays showed that the shot went in off the left goal post and then hit the back bar and bounced out. It was Stamkos 10th goal and the clock was set back 50 seconds.

"I thought this was one of his best games. He was all over the ice shooting the puck," Johnson said of Stamkos, who broke his leg a year ago on Nov. 11, 2013, and says he's still adjusting as he recovers.

Johnson gave Tampa Bay a two-goal lead at 6:02 with a one-time slap shot from the right faceoff dot past Howard for his fifth goal.

Franzen's power-play goal opened the scoring 6:14 into the game. He scored his fourth goal of the season on a one-time slap shot from above the right circle after Zetterberg won the faceoff following a goaltender interference penalty to Callahan. Nyquist passed the puck back to Kronwall at the left point, who fed Franzen at the right point.

Stamkos tied it with a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 12:53, beating Howard with a one-timer from the high slot.
