Brodeur, Devils blank struggling Lightning

NHL.com | Saturday, 12.14.2013 / 10:36 PM

Dainius Zubrus made Martin Brodeur's 124th career shutout a lot easier.

Zubrus scored twice in a three-minute span of the third period to give Brodeur some breathing room in the New Jersey Devils' 3-0 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Prudential Center in snowy Newark, N.J., on Saturday night

Brodeur made 33 saves for career shutout No 124 and his third of the season. His best stop came on a third-period breakaway by Nikita Kucherov after which the goalie checked the net behind him.

Brodeur said his teammates gave him a lot of help.

"I think puck control was a big key, and we didn't give up much even though they had a lot of shots, I was able to see most of the shots," he said. "Defensively, we were solid."

Damien Brunner also scored for the Devils, who won for the second time in seven games (2-4-1). New Jersey lost at the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 on Friday, a game it trailed 3-0 after one period.

Brodeur said battling back after falling behind in Pittsburgh helped the Devils against Tampa Bay.

"We battled back," he said. "I think we got a lot of confidence from the way we came back in that game and it helped us today."

Anders Lindback made 16 saves for Tampa Bay, which is 1-5-2 on the road without injured forward Steven Stamkos, including seven losses in a row. Stamkos, who's recovering from a broken right tibia, did some stickhandling on skates Saturday morning.

"The one thing that's saved us is we've been pretty good at home," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "We need to be a .500 team on the road and we've dipped."

Excluding a 6-5 shootout loss to the Washington Capitals, Tampa Bay has five goals in its five other December games.

The Lightning took four third-period shots in a 2-1 loss here Oct. 29, and were outshot 7-6 in a scoreless first period Saturday.

Late in the second, Devils defenseman Eric Gelinas zipped a sharp pass to Brunner, who gathered it in motion in the neutral zone and sped up the center of the ice. His forehand went over the left-hand glove of Lindback with 4:23 to go.

Brunner scored three goals in his first three games with the Devils, then went 24 with one, plus time as a healthy scratch. He ended a 17-game drought with two in a 5-4 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday.

"He looks like the player we saw in training camp, moving his feet, attacking holes," Devils coach Peter DeBoer said.

Zubrus made it 2-0 when his forecheck caused Lightning defenseman Eric Brewer to turn over the puck behind his net. Jaromir Jagr got it and fed Zubrus, who tapped it past Lindback at 6:44 of the third period.

It became 3-0 when Zubrus found the rebound of a Jagr shot to Lindback's right at the end line, and he forced it from behind the line off the goalie's pad into the net at 9:36. Jagr's second assist was his 17th of the season; he had 19 in 45 games last season.

"Anytime you lose a game and you sit here and say 'I thought we played well and lost,' it's disappointing," Cooper said. "We made some colossal errors that cost us and they capitalized.

"I didn't think it was one of those games where they it took to us. I thought they took advantage of what we gave them and we burned tonight."

Tampa Bay played the final four-plus minutes with an empty net.

The Lightning play a 5 p.m. ET game Sunday against the Detroit Red Wings before ending a three-game trip with a visit to the New York Islanders on Tuesday.

"We have to turn the page," Cooper said. "We have Detroit in less than 24 hours and we have to get ready and play like we did tonight without the errors."
