Ducks beat Lightning in OT with 5.2 seconds left

Curtis Zupke  - NHL.com Correspondent | Saturday, 11.23.2013 / 2:51 AM

ANAHEIM - Ryan Getzlaf skated and watched and hesitated for several seconds before he went into a double fist-pump dance to celebrate his game-winning goal in overtime.

"You could tell by my celebration I didn't know what to do," Getzlaf said.

Getzlaf will take his fluky goal with 5.2 seconds remaining in OT, which gave the Anaheim Ducks a 1-0 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday night at Honda Center.

The Ducks' captain came down the left wing and fired a shot at goalie Ben Bishop. The puck bounced off Bishop and landed near the goal line before Richard Panik inadvertently helped swipe it across the line.

Jonas Hiller made 31 saves in a goaltending duel with Bishop (41 saves) as the Ducks snapped a five-game winless streak (0-3-2) and re-took first place in the overall standings with 35 points.

"That was probably as good a goaltending display from both goaltenders I've seen in a very long time," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said.

Anaheim matched a franchise record with a 9-0-1 start at home. The win came two days after the Ducks blew a lead with 61 seconds left in regulation against the New Jersey Devils and lost on a fluke own goal by Ben Lovejoy in OT.

"It's big for our group," Getzlaf said. "Our guys played great tonight. It was a hard-fought game there against a good hockey team and an unbelievable goaltender. Our guys stayed with and stayed poised."

Hiller had to play after expected starter Viktor Fasth sustained a lower-body injury in pregame warm-ups, according to the team; he was not on the bench. Fasth missed 14 games earlier this season because of a lower-body injury, although it's unknown if this one is related to that.

Boudreau said Fasth will likely be out for the weekend and the team will likely recall a goaltender, probably Frederik Andersen, for Saturday's road game against the Phoenix Coyotes.

Hiller said he was told to be ready after warm-ups. The game was delayed a few minutes because of a pre-game ceremony recognizing Scott Niedermayer.

"Just on the way out [of the tunnel] Bruce goes 'You're starting,'" Hiller said. "And a couple of minutes later you're right in the middle of it, so it was almost nice to have to [wait] for Scotty, so I had a little extra time to focus."

Hiller, who allowed five goals in a Nov. 14 loss to Tampa Bay, got into a great matchup with Bishop in a game that saw a combined nine power plays.

Tampa Bay finished winless (0-3-1) on its four-game trip against Pacific Division opponents after coming west with a 7-0-0 mark against the Western Conference. The Lightning had been 6-0 in games decided after regulation.

"Getting one point is better than getting none," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "A lot of good things happened tonight. We played extremely hard. We played our third in four nights against a conference-leading team. It's a game of bounces. They got the bounce off the skate at the blue and got the bounce at the end with five seconds left. That was it. They just got the last bounce."

Bishop was receiving treatment, reportedly for dehydration, almost an hour after the game and was not immediately made available.

Cooper spoke for Bishop when asked about how tough it was to lose in that manner.

"Of course, he's [upset]," Cooper said. "We're all [upset]. We're five seconds away from a shootout. Who knows? You can't predict who's going to win a shootout but we didn't get a chance. It's why the game's great. There's 10 seconds left in the game. One team's going on a rush one way and the puck ends up in the net the other way. It comes around, goes around. At some point this year that bounce will go our way."

The Lightning's power play hasn't been the same without Steven Stamkos, but it generated chances in the second period.

Hiller made a dramatic glove save on Victor Hedman to highlight the second and on a breaking Tyler Johnson in the third.

"It was great to have some good stops early that kind of gave me the confidence," Hiller said. "In fact, it was a pretty good goaltender battle tonight."

What Bishop and Tampa Bay couldn't control was Andrew Cogliano, who had speed to burn all night. Bishop denied him on two shorthanded breakaways and another shorthanded try from the high left slot. Bishop also made a glove grab of Corey Perry in the first period and a blocker save on Perry in the third.

"Yesterday we lost 5-1, and today we tried to focus on our defense and I think we did," Ondrej Palat said of the Lightning's loss to the San Jose Sharks. "We played well. Bishop was amazing today. He helped us a lot."

Sami Salo got his stick on a wraparound attempt by Kyle Palmieri in the third to deny the Ducks.

It was a test of a defensive depth for Anaheim in its first game without Francois Beauchemin, who was placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. Beauchemin is eligible to be activated Nov. 27, meaning he will miss at least two more games. Beauchemin, the team's leading shot blocker and second in ice time, crashed into the boards Wednesday against the New Jersey Devils.

Tim Jackman made his Ducks debut and fought B.J. Crombeen on his second shift of the game. Tampa Bay defenseman Radko Gudas left the game with an upper-body injury.
