Oilers rebound in 6-2 Preds thrashing

NHL.com | Wednesday, 08.06.2014 / 4:50 AM

After a clunker in Dallas on Monday, the Edmonton Oilers were determined not to let it happen again.

They didn't.

Jordan Eberle and Shawn Horcoff each scored twice as the Oilers beat the Nashville Predators 6-2 on Tuesday night, ending their four-game road losing streak.

Horcoff, Ales Hemsky and Eberle beat Pekka Rinne in a span of 6:20 in the first period, and Eberle added his second of the night and seventh of the season early in the third. Jeff Petry and Horcoff added late goals for the Oilers, who have split the first two games of their four-game trip and looked nothing like the team that was beaten soundly by the Stars 24 hours earlier.

"The guys were cheesed off enough (after last night) that they came into this game engaged and ready to play, from the get-go," coach Tom Renney said. "Our first period was a real good road period for us.

"We've got to identify with a level of play and a standard of play and a commitment to doing the little things every night. When we do that, we're fine. But we have a tendency to give the puck up and turn it over and try to get fancy. There are no style points in this League. The bottom line is that, especially on the road, you have to play a real simple game."

Devan Dubnyk stopped 30 shots for the Oilers. He was less than nine minutes away from a shutout before Jordin Tootoo and Jonathon Blum scored late goals for the Predators, who had won 16 of their last 21 meetings with Edmonton.

Rinne, who has started all but one of Nashville's games this season, allowed three goals on 13 shots before being replaced by Anders Lindback to begin the second period.

"Too many turnovers, not really getting on them, playing a light, soft game," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said when asked what happened to his club in the opening 20 minutes. "They just transitioned and turned (the turnovers) into goals.

"We didn’t take advantage of the very young defensemen on their side. We turned pucks over way too much. We lost the game in the first period."

Edmonton opened the scoring 9:31 into the game when Horcoff would not be denied during a power play. Rinne stopped Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' shot but couldn't control the rebound in the crease. Horcoff drove to the net and powered the puck over the goal line for his fifth of the season.

Hemsky, playing his 500th NHL game, made it 2-0 at 11:39 when he was sent in alone from the Nashville blue line by Ryan Smyth and beat Rinne top-shelf on the glove side. Eberle increased the lead to three goals at 15:51 when he picked up the puck an instant after Taylor Hall was leveled by Tootoo and beat Rinne to the blocker side.

"I feel more mature this year ... I'm learning what it takes to play on the road and win on the road," said Eberle, who has 10 points in his last five games.

After being outshot 13-3 in the opening period, the Predators dominated the second in front of Lindback, outshooting the Oilers 18-7. Edmonton killed off 51 seconds of a 5-on-3 Nashville power play midway through the period, and Dubnyk preserved the shutout late in the period by stopping Colin Wilson on a breakaway.

"We had 12 chances in the second period and didn't come up with anything," Trotz said. "The 5-on-3 could have gotten us back into it."

Eberle relieved some pressure with his second of the night, circling in the Edmonton zone before working his way to the right of the slot and zipping a wrister through traffic and past Lindback.

Tootoo broke up Dubnyk's shutout bid by scoring a power-play goal with 8:28 left. Petry added a power-play goal 50 seconds later, and Horcoff converted Sam Gagner's feed for a goal with less than five minutes left before Blum's goal with 20 seconds left.

"These guys are trying hard," Renney said of his young team, which is coming off back-to-back last-place finishes in the overall standings. "We have to work on getting better every game."
