Stars blitz Oilers 4-1 to snap skid

DALLAS --  It was all hands on deck for the Dallas Stars on Monday night.

The Stars got goals from all four lines en route to a 4-1 win against the Edmonton Oilers at American Airlines Center, snapping a five-game losing streak. The Stars' last win before Monday was a 5-2 victory at Washington back on Nov. 8.

"I think it was our best team effort [of our season]," Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan said. "I thought our guys from top to bottom played 60 minutes hard. I didn't think there was a big lapse and we were committed to playing both ends of the rink. It was a good win for us. We needed it."

Dallas got the win in front of new owner Tom Gaglardi, who was introduced at a press conference earlier in the day as well as former franchise icon Mike Modano, who was also in attendance. Eleven different Stars had a point in Monday's victory.

At 8:30 of the opening period, a 31-foot wrister by Toby Petersen beat Oilers goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin through the five-hole to give the Stars an early lead. It was Petersen's first tally of the season and the first assists for both Tom Wandell and Eric Nystrom.

Getting a goal from his fourth line definitely brought a smile to the face of the Stars' coach.

"Yeah, it was big for them," Gulutzan said. "I thought they played real well."

Edmonton hoped to draw one back at 14:56 of the first when right winger Ales Hemsky attempted a slap shot from 30 feet, but saw his effort strike the crossbar and bounce away from danger.

After a quiet first half of the second period, Dallas center Steve Ott made it 2-0 with his third goal of the year, beating Khabibulin with an eight-foot wrister following a dead-on backhand pass by Mike Ribeiro from behind the Oilers' net. Dallas captain Brenden Morrow got the secondary assist for his 500th career point.

The visitors broke the shutout at 15:24 of the second period when Oilers rookie Ryan Nugent-Hopkins netted his eighth goal of the season, shooting a 24-foot wrister past the right side of Dallas goaltender Kari Lehtonen, making it a 2-1 game.

However, the Stars quickly answered and regained their two-goal edge just 50 seconds later when Michael Ryder beat Khabibulin top shelf with a 25-foot wrister to make it 3-1.

Dallas added an empty-net, shorthanded goal at 18:36 of the third period when Radek Dvorak scored his first of the year. The tally came just over a minute after the Oilers pulled Khabibulin for an extra attacker.

Getting points from 11 different players, including four different goal scorers was another big plus from this win for Gulutzan.

"Yeah, I really think it's the way we can have success at this level," Gulutzan said. "Our slogan is every day counts and everyone matters. We need everybody all hands on deck to get wins. We need to find that every night and find a way to get it done."

Lehtonen stopped 17 of 18 shots he faced for the win, his first victory since the Nov. 8 win over the Capitals. Khabibulin faced 35 shots and stopped 32 for Edmonton.

Oilers coach Tom Renney saw his team muster just 18 shots and wasn't too pleased with his team's effort in the loss.

"We didn't measure up near what we needed to. We didn't manage the puck like we have to if we're going to beat teams like this or anybody else in the League for that matter," Renney said.

Not only did the Stars snap a five-game losing streak, but they also ended a two-game home losing streak and are now 7-3-0 at home this season.

"It feels pretty good to kind of get a gulp of air," Gulutzan said. "I thought that our players played real hard tonight and Kari [Lehtonen] was sharp when he needed to be. We got a real good team effort. We were physical and we played hard. We still took a lot of penalties but we cleaned up our own mess."

Edmonton continues their current four-city road swing with a visit to Nashville on Tuesday night. Dallas will resume its homestand Wednesday night against Los Angeles.
