Canucks rout struggling Predators 5-1

NHL.com | Friday, 10.21.2011 / 1:55 AM

For the second time in three nights, the Vancouver Canucks had 40 shots. This time, they were able to find the back of the net.

Henrik Sedin had a goal and an assist as the Canucks whipped the Nashville Predators 5-1 on Thursday night in the first meeting between the teams since their second-round playoff series last spring.

The Canucks outshot Nashville 40-26 just 48 hours after outshooting the Rangers 40-19 but allowing four third-period goals in a 4-0 loss. This time, the Canucks blew the game open early, as Henrik and Daniel Sedin, Dale Weise and Chris Higgins all scored in the first 20 minutes.

"We were more simple, had more of a commitment to not making so many plays through the neutral zone and just getting it into their end and letting our work ethic and then our skill take over," Higgins said. "Once we've got the puck in the offensive end, we've got plenty of skill to make opportunities happen."

Ryan Kesler added a third-period goal, his first of the season in his second game after returning from offseason hip surgery. Matt Halischuk's first-period goal was all the offense the struggling Predators (2-3-1) could manage on a night when they had to kill 10 power plays and were outshot for the sixth time in as many games.

The Canucks, now 3-3-1, showed no ill effects from the loss to New York, a game that saw them booed as they left the ice.

"We should have had one or two goals against the Rangers but we didn't and that's when it usually comes back and hurts you," Henrik Sedin said. "But tonight we got the early ones."

The earliest came on the kind of bounce they didn't get on Tuesday -- Daniel Sedin scored from behind the net when he banked the puck in off Pekka Rinne's catching glove 2:11 into the game.

After Halischuk tied it at 4:01, Henrik Sedin put the Canucks ahead to stay at 5:56 when his shot deflected off defenseman Kevin Klein and past Rinne. It came on Vancouver's first power play after they went 0-for-8 against the Rangers.

Weise, acquired on waivers from the Rangers just before the start of the season, got his first goal as a Canuck at 12:02 when he tipped a puck lobbed toward the net by Alex Edler.

"You know what, it was top shelf, so I'll take it," joked Weise. "If anyone asks, I'll say it was top shelf, I'm happy with that."

Higgins got another fortuitous bounce when he tried to pass to Cody Hodgson on a 2-on-1 break. Nashville defenseman Jonathon Blum blocked the attempt but Higgins wristed the rebound off the defenseman's stick behind Rinne at 13:28. Anders Lindback played the last two periods, allowing Kesler's 5-on-3 goal in the third.

"Sometimes you feel almost disbelief things are going that way," said Rinne, a Vezina Trophy finalist last season who made 12 saves before leaving.

Roberto Luongo bounced back from his disastrous third period against the Rangers with a solid 25-save performance.

"We didn't give up much defensively," said Luongo, who sported a new mask. "I was seeing the puck well tonight and I was able to make some saves and when we play good defense, we can generate some offense off of that."
