Vokoun shines in Caps' win over Sens

NHL.com | Saturday, 10.15.2011 / 9:53 PM

Another one-goal game, another win for the Washington Capitals.

Tomas Vokoun made 33 saves -- including 26 in the final two periods  -- as the Caps eked out a 2-1 victory against the Ottawa Senators at the Verizon Center on Saturday night.

"I suspected it was going to be a really tough game," Vokoun said. "I have been on that side before, what they are going through. You know you're coming back and you're angry, the coaches are angry and yelling at the players. Everybody comes out and gives their best effort."

Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson provided two first-period goals for the Caps, who improved to 4-0 after their fourth consecutive one-goal win. Veteran forward Mike Knuble assisted on both goals as Washington finally won a game in regulation.

"We did a couple good things out there, but I think a lot of things can get better," Backstrom said.

Peter Regin scored the lone goal for the Senators, who got 24 saves from Alex Auld. Ottawa has dropped four of its first five games and fell to 0-3 on the road.

"It's just frustrating we don't get a point out of that game," Sens forward Jason Spezza said. "We've got to keep trying to chip away and get some wins."

The Capitals struck first with a power-play goal 8:47 into the opening period. Knuble possessed the puck from behind the net and found Alexander Semin, who then backhanded a pass to Backstrom for a one-timed wrist shot from a sharp right angle.

Washington made it 2-0 just over three minutes later when Johansson scored on a wraparound attempt as the puck trickled through the legs of Auld.

Ottawa got on the board with just 26 seconds to go in the first period. Regin pounced on a loose puck off an initial shot from the right point by David Runbland. Regin gained control of the puck in front of the right circle and beat Vokoun with a wrister.

The Senators outshot the Capitals 26-12 during the last two periods, but Vokoun stood tall between the pipes for Washington.

"We're disappointed with the outcome, we thought we deserved a way better fate with the way that we played," Senators head coach Paul MacLean said.
